My Larix kaempferi 'Diane' in fall color

Minneapolis, MN(Zone 5a)

This is a picture of my contorted Japanese larch that was taken this fall. This tree was a fresh graft (a foot tall) when planted, in the summer of 1997, in a nursery bed. The tree was moved to its current spot two years later. This is my favorite larch. Completely hardy in USDA zone 4a.

Sorry, I'm not sure why the photo is turned on its side? The photo was upright when uploaded.

I guess I sobered up, huh?

It is taking a while to get used to this iMAC computer. I miss some of the applications that I had on my Windows system.

Mike,

'Diana' has really nice color! I need to get more familiar with this curly variety. How old would you say that this plant is?

Thanks,
Ernie

Hi Ernie,
This tree was a fresh graft (one foot tall) in 1997. I planted the tree in a nursery bed for two years and then moved the tree to this spot. All of the Larix kaempferi cultivars grow very quickly. I have L. k. 'Diane' (aka 'Diana'), 'Blue Rabbit', 'Pendula' & 'Jakobsen's Pyramid' (aka 'Jacobsen's Pyramid') in my yard. I love all of the deciduous conifers. The tree in the picture was 9 years old this summer.

One thing to remember: since Larix kaempferi grows so quickly, don't purchase large plants, if buying via mail order. These plants produce a nice specimen in a fairly short period of time.
