Final Quiz: Harder still?
Old eyes, old computer...but I'll guess a well-maintained Myrica.
Nope. I'm going to let this one hang for a while before I answer it.

Now that I'm at a good computer with better imaging...
How about a really densed-up Clethra hedge?
my vote is clethra too - looking at all the dried up flower stalks
Doesn't Clethra get really leggy rather than dense. If I am wrong please share what would promote such density...more food than water? Good guess VV on Myrica I would have said the same with the top leaves holding on strong in the late fall. kt
The most magnificent winner is Viburnum Valley. Yep, that, my friends, is what your Clethra alnifolia will turn into in fifty years if you don' rejunvenate it once in a while.
