Illicium Floridanum - anise?

red bud?
Let's narrow the field; a Rosaceae, perhaps?
Nope, you're all losers! Disanthus cercidifolius. I must admit I have one. It hasn't died, but it hasn't bloomed yet either, so I was surprised to find a giant one, in bloom now, with classic Hamamelidaceae seed pods (seed already ejected). Couldn't detect any fragrance.
