Growth for Ceanothus americanus

Bureau County, IL(Zone 5a)

Have a question.......how long before my inch Ceanothus americanus actually become 2 ft? Or something that is actually noticeable in the landscape? They were planted last spring, gotten from a native plant sale in a burb of Chicago. They haven't put out any growth at all.

Thanks,

Terry

I'm interested in planting these. Did yours ever get any bigger? :)

No Michelle, they didn't. Basically they shriveled up and died. They were replaced with some that were equally as small and they too shriveled up and died. I then bought some larger Ceanothus americanus and those are doing well. My thought of smaller is not always the best idea. Not sure why they wouldn't take off, but they didn't. Hope this helps some.☺

It does! Did you buy yours locally or did you mail order? I can't find any in my area.

The first 2 I mail-ordered from a place that wasn't all natives. The next 3, that were even smaller, I bought from a native plant sale here locally. The big ones, the ones that are still alive, were bought over in Monee, IL at Possibility Place (not mail order unfortunately). One of my favorite mail order native nurseries is Prairie Moon. They have them

I've always had excellent success with everything I've ordered from them.

They should reach 2ft their first year from 2yo plants. First year plants may make half the size, and no they won't look like much. Mine are just breaking dormancy now. I also thought they were dead because they were nice plants last year. There was no growth on the sticks. But I looked at the crown and sure enough just yesterday, they are coming up.

I agree terry, Prairie Moon is an excellent source. I bet they would answer any questions too as they are always helpful even if you aren't placing an order.
