It's an assassin bug of some kind...maybe this one, Arilus cristatus, called a Wheel Bug

Yes, that's IT! What a horrible looking beast!
Thanks!

The Woodlands, TX(Zone 9a)

It's considered a beneficial insect, because it eats other insects. Unfortunately, a bee is an insect too.

Ah, well, if he had eaten a BAD insect, he would still be alive now. LOL!

send those wheelbugs to me, i love them!

How come?

mid central, FL(Zone 9a)

they kill and eat the big-footed leaf-leg bugs (ceejay knows the ones i mean, lol) and all kinds of other bad bugs that i have problems with. if it gets a good bug once in a while, that's ok. they are worth their weight in gold to me when the roses put on new growth in spring.

LOL trackin - you mean leaf-footed bugs. "Big-footed leaf-leg bugs" - I'll have to remember that! LOL!!!

Magnolia, TX(Zone 8b)

Ah! Nice to know. Next time I'll just move him to my roses!

I found this wierd thing up here in Tn 2 summers ago that also attacts big bumble bees. I found out it is called a robber fly and its favorite prey is bumble bees.

Wow. And on a Buddleia bush if I'm not mistaken. Eh? ;o) I know those leaves anywhere! Plus I just cut about 3 1/2 feet off my Dark Night yesterday! Nice pic!
