I was poking about in my back garden this morning and found this strange looking chrysalis hanging from my back porch railing. Is there a Snout Nose Butterfly in there? I've seen many kinds of cocoons and chrysalis before, but have yet to come upon one quite like this. You can see the wee eyes and long "nose" of its occupant. Can't wait to see it emerge!
Melanie :)
Odd Looking Chrysalis!
It sure looks like there could be a snout in there! lol But it looks like it's a Sulphur chrysalis! woohoo for you! I'm guessing you have some Cassia plants?
See this thread: http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/665721/
hmm...well,honestly, konkrete.....I don't have any cassias.....but I have ALL sorts of sulphurs in the back right now flocking all over my Indigo Spires, of all things. Sort of hovering around the Copper Canyon Daisys....but mostly the salvias. It must be some sort of sulphur because it sure looks similar to the one in the other thread. Thanks for posting that link! :)
Melanie
I can't get over the Sulphur crysalis. How amazing is that! Looks just like a leaf! Way cool! Melanie - I'm so envious of all the sulphurs you have. I rarely see any in my yard. Hopefully that will change next year as I add Cassia to my yard! Something in or around your yard has them flocking there! How lucky you are!!!!
becky, aren't they the prettiest little things? I found this little girl/guy on my patchouly plant this morning. I had to look hard since it looks so much like a greenish leaf. Is this another type of Sulphur? I'm not sure what has attracted so many different types of butterflys to the yard this year. This is only my second year in our new home...with a new garden in the back....growing Texas natives, etc. The Indigo Spires and Mealy Cup Sage have been a HUGE hit as well as Mexican Devil Weed or Spiny Aster. Mexican Milkweed has been attracting alot of Monarchs as well... :) Its all very exciting.. :)

Melanie - I am not familiar with Sulphers and especially all the different ones found in TX. But it kind of looks like a cloudless Sulpher. Just an uneducated guess. Some of the Sulphers get huge! I just love those flying yellows!
Great pictures Melanie, that last one looks like a Clouded Sulfur, very pretty!
Gorgeous! Thanks for sharing all the photos!
Oooooh..... can you see me drooling, Melanie?! lol
I WANT SULPHUR BUTTERLFIES IN MY YARD!!!
Great sulphur chrysalis!!! Those buggers are really hard to find out in the wild...they camouflage themselves extremely well!!!
By the way...this is a Snout chrysalis. It's only about 3/4" long. My dad found it last weekend when he was weeding and saved it for me. I brought it home with me thinking it was some kind of lyside but a Snout emerged a couple of days ago.
(I know it sounds odd to say 'but a Snout' but you have to understand we have billions of those butterflies out here).
It was still very cute and I released it in my backyard...to join the other gazillion Snouts :o)

That first chrysalis looks like a Cloudless Sulphur, they are angular and pink or green that changes colors as it matures. That's my vote :)
TX your 3:26 p.m. post looks like a Southern Dogface to me. See the V in the wing. Your pics seem to show several types of Sulphurs. Lucky you!!!
I'm not going to attemp to ID the yellow one, but will go with Donna because she has raised several different yellow ones. (I will next year!!) (I've got to take time to post my pics too!)
Melanie, the Indigo Spires pic with the Sulphur is my favorite! Someone (maybe you) posted one of these a while back and it made me want to plant everything purple and yellow! My Indigo Spires has grown so huge this year that it has sprawled all over everything else. I think I'll cut it back next year (if I can get the nerve) and see if it thickens up. I love it!
Cat, I've only seen one of those Snout butterflies and didn't realize what it was until I looked at my pics later.
You're probably right Donna, what threw me was it doesn't have the dog black 'eye', but it does have the 'v'.
I love the Mystic Spires too, wish the bees didn't.
lol konkrete...yep, that was me.....I remember talking to you about how pretty the purple and yellow were together. Those photos that you saw were taken this summer....so that goes to show ya that I've had these lovelies alllll summer, clouding around the Indigo Spires and Mealy Cup Sage. :) Its been such an incredible experience seeing so many flying flowers in the back. And don't even mention the "Snouts!" lol....We had literal clouds of them migrating thru. I was standing on my back porch and it looked as tho a giant were sweeping them off of my roof! Just hordes of them in the air. I've seen alot of snout migrations...being a native South Texan....but never one quite like this year.
I went ahead and cut the Spires back yesterday, konkrete. I had to, since they were beginning to lay on my giant agave and make it a bit lopsided. They are definitely garden bullys and will take over a spot. But once cut back, they'll grow back quite nicely. And the flying flowers love 'em. :)
I think that this one of the photos that you saw. A sulphur on the Mealy Cup Sage. :)
Melanie
I just love that purple and yellow! That's not a normal color combo for me either. I'm painting my bedroom now and it's a good thing I've already got the paint or I might be changing the color scheme! Surely there's somewhere in my house that I can use purple and yellow. I'm not so sure tho since everything is green's and blue's. Hmmm...maybe I can repaint the bathroom...lol
Did you get any pics of all those Snouts? I hadn't ever seen one or heard of them until this year. Maybe because they just aren't as showy as the more popular ones.
Yeah, my I. Spires must be cut back mid-season next year. It's grown over and into my butterfly bush and on top of all kinds of other things. I let it just be the bully tho. I've lost control of my children this year so I think I might have to be a little less lenient next year. But that's good for others because I can root more.
Have you tried the Mystic Spires? It's more compact and doesn't flop like the Indigo. It doesn't get as big, it's like a dwarf.
I love the yellow and purple combo too.
I always think the pics of butterflies on their opposite color wheel color are most stunning.
No, I haven't seen the Mystic Spires. I meant to ask you about your comment. It looks like something that would love to welcome the new Sulphurs I will have next year! Wanna root some and share? :)
Sure, I'll root a couple, do you want a piece Melanie? Sorry I didn't even think of it.....it probably will root easy like any salvia.
Mine is about 21/2 feet tall and pretty well behaved.
hmmm....My fav nursery has Mystic in the Spring, fly_.....so I could probably pick some up then. If its as pretty as the Indigo...and not so tall and floppy....I'll definitely have to check them out. Thanks for the offer, fly_.. :)
I didn't get any photos of the snouts, konkrete.....I wish I had now. Commuting to work and home again was a nightmare...because you literally had to drive thru clouds of them. Everyone had wind shields and grills covered with them this late summer! Everytime we opened our garage, alot of them would fly in and get trapped, tho I tried to get as many out as I could.
lol @ the purple and yellow bathroom. Hmm...well, if nothing else, you could paint your mailbox that combo...lol...I do agree tho, its a nice mix. :)
Melanie
Thanks Fly! Indigo roots easy in water and quickly becomes a full size plant so maybe those will too.
Melanie, I don't have a mailbox (we have the block-box) but you are right, I could use it outside! I have a pink and a purple birdhouse so I could add something like that. I love the bright colors outside. Maggiemoo has a purple fence! I wonder if my neighbors would mind the trellis I put on top of my fence being purple? (do I care? lol)
lol...well, there ya go!
Yeah, we have one of those ugly ole block boxes too....I miss those old mailboxes on a post, as my parents have back home. I reckon our HOA would have a heart attack if I painted ANYTHING purple and yellow...lol
