Interesting Ginkgo info...

Minneapolis, MN(Zone 5a)

Hi all,
For those of you who are interested in Ginkgos, I thought this little blurb from the Ohio State University Extension bulletin was pretty interesting.

"Selected male cultivars are available for landscape planting, but you must be careful, as a number of cultivars introduced as males were late-flowering females."

This is the first time I have ever run across a statement like this. There is no mention of what possible male cultivars are really female cultivars.

Here is a link to the whole page:

http://ohioline.osu.edu/b700/b700_10.html

This statement is located in the last paragraph.

Has anyone else seen or read anything about this before? Since many of the ginkgo cultivars are fairly new (70's or later), it might be a while before these pseudo-male ginkgo trees start to fruit since they were really "late-flowering females".

Any comments or info?
Thanks,
Mike

Seems to me, way, way back in my past, I remember something that Gingkos might occasionally change sex.

Oh, and how about this link for something interesting about Gingkos.

A lot of Ginkgos in Britain don't start to flower until they are 150 years old or more.

Scott,
I have heard that, too, and most recently about the Kew ginkgo. I seem to remember reading that there is now a fruiting branch on the Kew ginkgo.

I hope that any of the cultivars that are determined to be female have been removed from the market and/or renamed so people know they are planting a female tree.

Resin,
I would guess the slow flowering is due to the lack of summer heat in Britain (and the trees trying to comprehend those darn temperatures in degrees Celsius (:o). Sorry about that, I just couldn't resist. I'm not sure I could ever get used to temps in Celsius; 20 degrees C is approx. 70 degrees F, but 20 C just sounds so terribly cold. (:o)
