white pine boughs

(Zone 5b)

Hi,
I lost the top 2/3 of a white pine in last week's wind storm and have kept the boughs, some as long as 9 ft, in a plastic pail of water. How long into the winter will the needles stay green? I realized the water will freeze and probably crack the plastic container, but thought having a water source would provide continued greenery in a large outdoor decoration. I'm in zone 5.
Thanks Jacqui

I think they'll stay green all winter. Last year, I made a nest of pine boughs in my bird bath, and put a round topiary form wired with white lights, on top of it, for an all winter display.

Thanks Prairie Girl....I want to place this huge "arrangement" in a spot where I severly pruned an Euonymus wintercreeper because it has scale, and am missing green in its spot. Of course, I'm also missing the top of the white pine tree!!!

That happened to a lot of spruce and pines around here a couple of years ago. Lots of damage, blamed on "microbursts," which until then, I had never even heard of before. It's a severe weather pattern of damaging winds that accompany thunderstorms. We were fortunate it spared out spruce, but it sheared the top off my neighbor's pine, and felled a lot of trees. I just took a peek outside, it seems to have three leaders now, but otherwise is fine.
