Ginger 101 guidance please...

St. Paul, MN(Zone 4b)

Hello Ginger Afficiandos.

While I think gingers (and their fans) are amazing, they are not one of my areas of specialization. I have just one. Would someone kindly save me the research and give me a bit of guidance?

Thanks to the generosity of someone on this site, I know have this lovely pot of gingers. I believe they are a cone/comb ginger of some sort. They looked lush and full in my garden this year, but did not bloom.

Our outdoor gardening season is definitely over now. What should I do with these? Should I keep them on the sunporch and keep watering them like a tropical houseplant? Cut them back and stick the pot in the basement? Let them die back and then do something else?

Any advice would be sincerely appreciated.

Erick, I don't have enough expertise to help you, wish I did. It kinda
looks like an alpinia to me but I'm not sure. Grow it in a warm sunny site and
see what happens, continue with watering but don't over do it. Lets see
what happens. Seems like some alpinias bloom on new growth and some on previous yrs growth so don't prune it back yet. See if it blooms this coming spring and/or summer. If it doesn't bloom, then you can prune it back some next fall.
Just speculation on my part.
Edited to add that I think I read that Alpinias are heavy drinkers,
maybe heavy feeders too. Be sure and feed it starting in the spring.
