November Blooms

Chowchilla, CA(Zone 10a)

As few and far between as they may be ...

Every once in a while, we get a lovely treat. Here is mine.

H. davidcummingii has been kind enough to have two umbels open at the same time. Yep, I am a lucky gal!

Thanks so much everyone!!
I can't believe it myself. I've been constantly jealous of Sandyc because hers is almost always in bloom, so I was thrilled when mine did - this is the first time it's bloomed for me.

Bea ... you are hilarious!!!

Prescott, AZ

Oh Wow, what a beautiful flower. No wonder Sandy is raving all the time about this one. Congrats Ann that is a real beauty. I love the color of pink. Now does this one smell?

Tami, that picture is just STUNNING!!! H. davidcummingii smells like a mixture of perfume and buttered movie popcorn - I like it! The strongest time to smell it is around 4:00am - two umbel's will run you out of the room.

pdoyle: share all your blooms. the only two that will bloom for me are the DS-70 (I still like bilobata better than this scientific boring number name) and the lacunosa.

BE PROUD!!!!

Long Beach, CA

Ann....beautiful bloom and photo. Do yours smell? I never smell anything on mine..but it could be just me. Mine is not blooming now. In fact...hardly anything of mine is blooming. I don't know what is wrong around here. However, my 2 nummeraloides did and it turned out they have DIFFERENT flowers. One has the usual white with pink centers...but the other one has yellowish centers (coronas). I did take a picture but haven't got it on the computer yet. (been having back issues, and haven't done much on here lately at all). Anyway, besides that my multiflora is ALWAYS blooming so that is boring to me. Ha I guess that's what makes the occational and illusive bloom so special. I do have a little tiny unbel forming on the little bilobata plant that Annie sent me, so I am excited about that. Will try to get a picture of that too, altho I am not so good at tiny little close up as you all. Since my australis quit blooming, really NOTHING besides those is giving me any flowers here. So all of you that have lovely foliage, but no blooms...you are NOT ALONE. Ha Must be a bloom slump.
Tami...that nummeraloides plant you pictured is lovely. How ...or what is that growing on? You need to take a picture from farther back so I can see what that is. I am having trouble with a visual of where it is growing out of.

Tami , I am with Marcy , What does Sheri have that plant growing on ??? She has the Hoya touch for sure.

Marcy mine smells really wonderful....

Prescott, AZ

The plant is on a ledge comming in her walk way. She was in Ireland for 10 days and I thought she was going to miss out on all of her lovely blooms. The whole house just smells wonderful. She gives her plants her doves poop, collects all the little droppings and then puts them in a gallon jug of water and lets it set overnight and waters away. Her is another shot of the plant off to the left.

Dawn, that is a beautiful bloom (and I see another is on the way). I have never got my DS-70 to bloom (it is also a favorite of the cats to chew on so it may never bloom).

Tami, I am sensing the blooms are a big fat thank you from the plant to Sheri - doves poop? If I was a plant and my human collected that for me, I'd give her a big thank you too!

Just GLORIOUS Carol!!! What kind of light do H. lamingtoniae and H. chlorantha grow in?
Jealously yours,
Ann

Brisbane, Australia

Carol, H. lobbii with orange flowers is IML1524 according to my list.

Roy

Murrells Inlet, SC(Zone 8a)

Ann, i'm not sure what intensity of light that Carol uses for her chlorantha, but I grow both varieties of chlorantha that she sells in fact they both came from her.

I grow them in my gh under bright indirect light and both grow like weeds! I havent seen any flowers yet but hopefully that come soon.

I think both would have bloomed sooner but after growing them for almost a year I realised that i had them in too larg of pots and they kept turning yellow and loosing branches.

What i did when they arrived was to leave them in the original pots that Carol had them in. I cut the bottoms out of those and then inserted the entire things pot and all into larger pots. The larger pots might have been in the 10"-12" range. It took me almost loosing the plantst to realise what I was doing wrong.

These 2 varieties of chlorantha were the only 2 hoyas that I was having any trouble with. So finally a little light came on and told me that maybe the pots I had them in were TOO BIG!!

So I decided to bump them down from those big pots and put them into 6" baskets. Almost immediately I got astonishing results. They began to grow like wildfire and havent stopped since!!

I'm still learning as I go what these plants will and will not tolerate too much. But for the most part what i've been doing since day one has worked as these 2 particular plants are the only ones to have given me any problems thus far.

Some of my shade loving hoyas get a bit more light than they probably should be getting but when your gh is located in an open field in full sun it's a bit hard to control the amount of light that gets in.

I have the entire roof coverd with shade cloth and it still gets extremely bright inside so on the side that the shade requiring plants are on I also put bamboo privacy slats on the roof.

I buy those from HD. They are 6ft tall x 15 ft long and cost around $18 I think. They allow for a little bit of light to come in through the bamboo stalks but filter out most of it.

Well I guess is hould shut up now,I just hijacked this one and started running with it!!

Oh, I have a few things blooming but no pics yet.
H. meliflua ssp fraterna is blooming as is H. cv silver pink. coriacea has buds and so do quite a few others.

Chowchilla, CA(Zone 10a)

dmichael, I would love to see photos of your H. meliflua ssp. fraterna!! I'll bet its gorgeous!

So, what I think you are saying is that the chlorantha needs really bright light. Thanks!!! Now I need to figure out where I can move them to so they get brighter light for longer periods during the day.

Ann

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

Dmichael is right... I moved my big chlorantha into my new shade house which gets VERY bright light and about 70% shade....and since moving it there it started 'throwing' dozens of peduncles/umbels. It also get rained on thru the shade cloth so it is humid in there.

Carol

Murrells Inlet, SC(Zone 8a)

So far neither the H. chlorantha or the H. chlorantha v tuituilensis have made any peduncles but at the rate they are both currently growing.I dont think i'll have to wait verry much longer.

I'm just glad that I realized when I did that I had themway over potted. Since bringing them down to 6" baskets as opposed to 12"pots the problems have gone away. When I say problems I mean yellowing of leaves, stems turning partially brown and drying up,loss of leaves.

Ann,the H. meliflua ssp fraterna is a huge plant. It began as a cutting from David Liddle almost a year ago. It was about 3ft long when I got it. Once it rooted and got a permanent pot, that was it!!! It hasnr stopped growing since.

Its a neat plant too with those long thick strappy leaves and the flowers aint bad either!!! The cluster that is open rightnow only has about 5 blooms on it .

It stayed in bloom pretty much most of the spring and summer and the new buds would grow so fast from the centers of the peduncles that before the set that was currently open could finish the new ones would be ready to pop open.

One that i cant wait to see bloom is my aff. fraterna, the one that looks like H. coriacea. I dont know what happened to that plant but when it started growing it went into overdrive.

Carol I dont know if you recall what that plant looked like when you sent it to me but it has more than tripled in size. I have it spiraling around an 36" spiral topiary frame and it is really neat looking.

I promise I am working on getting some pics to post of allof these plants that I keep talking about but no one has seen yet!!!
