First blooms on Cherub

Colts Neck, NJ(Zone 7a)

She is in my basement under artificial lights. This flower opened today and there are quite a few others. I have to say, next to some of the gorgeous pinks that have been featured on this forum, this one, so far, looks rather ordinary.

Here is a little closer look.

She's pretty cool looking. Wish I had some blooms in the house right now.

I have one brug to my name, and it's Cherub. Got it earlier this year, and it's maybe 15 inches tall. No blooms, of course. I'm looking forward to that day, though!

Maben, MS(Zone 7b)

I was wondering the other day about this brug, I know a while back several people here ordered it.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Oh is this the brug from was it Parks? I must say yours looks so happy indoors. Sofi. Even the leaves look great. You really can't judge a brug at this time of year. I bet it looks much different next summer. I think it looks so pretty and so well grown for sure.

Crumpler, WV

Sofi, like Kell said, this time of year you really can't judge the true color of a brug, especially when those blooms open in the house.

I bought my Cherub early in the season, way before they dropped the price to a couple of dollars per plant. I did have several blooms on mine, but it was late in the year before I got them. It was late Aug. early Sept. when mine first started blooming and the color was much darker than what your picture shows.

Here are a couple of pics of mine that colored up somewhat before the weather really cooled off. And the blooms in these pics are several days old. The blooms lasted so long because that it was cool and rainy, that is the reason for some of the spots on the blooms.

I am sure that when it blooms in the heat of summer next year it will be quite darker. From the shape and position of the flower and the single split of the calyx, I would say that it is a candida type brug, so it should do well for just about everyone.

Something to look forward to next summer..I got in on the 1.95 deal and Im just so excited to see what it looks like this coming year...Judy

Colts Neck, NJ(Zone 7a)

I bought Cherub early in the season (and paid full price too). I didnt see a Y until late September - maybe because I checked for one a dozen times a day all summer.

Kell thanks for the advice earlier in the season, and all of your cultural hints and inspiring photos. I still think your Fluffles is the prettiest I have seen.

Davidwv I am grateful to you for posting pictures of your Cherub. The bloom is beautiful and exactly the color I am hoping for. Maybe next summer mine will look as good as yours.

Hi, folks. I bought Cherub from that sale at Parks and they never sent it until the middle of July. It's still very tiny and only has 4 leaves. Someone suggested maybe I had put it in too large a pot. Seems healthy enough. Just didn't grow much. I repotted it into a 10" pot and brought it in before the first frost in October. Any advice for the winter? It's my first brug.

Sofie and David, both your pictures of Cherub are very purrrrrrrty!! I just keep hoping I have a pink or will get one.

Oh my, they really did send you a tiny one. In my case, I would keep it in the most light you can and be so careful watering that. It is still in a pretty big pot and I have noticed lots of wet dirt sometimes causes little brugs to rot easily. In the spring you can get away with bigger pots. In winter they slow down some even inside in light and with fertilizer. I will say it looks happy enough now. If you can't give it lots of light, I would even repot if down smaller.

Some say you need to let them go dormant as they do in their natural habitat. I never let my small ones under my lights go dormant or in my case here where it stays warmer, even slow down. They are too small. I have found small brugs love foliar feeding, gives them a real boost. You might try that with MG.

Good luck with your first brug. I have got to say yours is a adorable and I would bet the first of many.

Wheatfield, NY(Zone 6a)

thanks, Kell. It only had one tiny leaf when I got it. I'll try the foliar feeding and get it under the lights with my orchids. guess I was a little overoptimistic. here's a longer shot with the trellis it was 'supposed' to climb on LOL next one I won't cheap out...I'll buy a nice one from a good nursery :0)

Luv your girl trellis! Where did you get it from?
: )Donna

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

In spring you will be shocked at how fast that little one will grow. The trick is to keep feeding them, almost force feeding. Also I have read on here people do overpot them and they love it. They put little ones in 20 gallon pots and have great success. But I think that is better for the spring. I have done that once or twice and end up just watering right around the plant, not the whole pot. I usually keep them in smaller pots to begin with but move them up fast if I am being good. The bigger the pot the bigger they grow. I start my cuttings in 16 oz plastic red cups and then they go to 1 gallon to 5 gallon to 15 gallon to 25 gallon pot. I can move them up thru all sizes in 1 year but usually it takes 2 years.

Your trellis is so cute! But you will find your brug will have a hard time under it. It will go crooked and come out the sides and overwhelm that trellis in no time and you will be stuck leaving it on. Brugs really do not climb. They are more of a tree or a bush, depending on how you train it and prune it.

Norwalk, IA(Zone 5b)

Mine came here in May and STILL hasn't grown 6 inches taller, just sits there. Doesn't say much for its genetics huh?

Northwest, OH(Zone 5b)

Wow, Kyle. Now I don't feel so bad. I keep reading how brugs are so easy, but you couldn't prove it by me. I've only got Cherub to judge by. On the other hand, it's not dead yet, either. LOL.

Kylee

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Geez Kyle, time for the big round can! I keep expecting tendrils to go along with that shape too, LOL. I guess they priced it right at $1.95. LOL

I guess I better take it all back, Grampapa! If Kyle can't get it to grow, no kind of fertilizer will help.

Wheatfield, NY(Zone 6a)

I got a snail vine at the same time. that only lived about a week. as long as this one's alive I won't give up on it. but I may have to get another one to see what happens in the spring for comparison LOL I won't be buying from Park's anymore though. My original order was a clematis I really wanted, so I decided to get Cherub and the snail vine on the 1.95 sale. I waited weeks and didn't hear anything. they finally sent the 2 sale plants (tiny and pitiful), I e-mailed to ask about the clematis and they said 'unfortunately' it wasn't available any longer. I said...it was available when I ordered it. So I paid (I think) 8.95 shipping for 2 half dead sale plants, one of which is now all dead and the other apparently was a smoker because it's growth is stunted, that I would never have ordered had I known that they wouldn't be sending the clematis. when I complained they offered no compensation of any kind.

I still have my cute angel trellis :0) something fun will grow on her! and I have an excuse to buy a new brug in the spring

Northwest, OH(Zone 5b)

I'm sorry to hear that you had problems with Park's. I've really not had any problems with things I got from them, except for a malva that wasn't in good shape when I got it and it didn't make it. I e-mailed them about it and they promptly refunded my money.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Oh funny, I bought a snail vine from them too! It was sickly looking and died soon too! I had seen so many pictures of them on Dave's and drooled every time.

Why don't you try a Japanese morning glory on that so cute trellis? I was looking at them yesterday and boy do they have some pretty enough to mesmerize you. And some are not aggressive either but somewhat dainty and so sweet.

I saw a few that were $45 for just 3 seeds on eBay. WHOA!!! I still can't get over that. I am more the $1.99 type for a whole pack. LOL

Wheatfield, NY(Zone 6a)

I never heard of Japanese m.g. I'll take a look. I was going to get some seeds for bush m.g....ok, I'm back. some of them don't climb too far. good idea, Kell, that would be cute. we'll have to look for a GOOD place to get snail vine. they're so pretty.

Colts Neck, NJ(Zone 7a)

I guess its appropriate to end this thread with the title "Last blooms on Cherub." I noticed today that all the new top growth is falling off and the leaves are turning yellow. I am surprised at how long the blooms have lasted and glad that the color has deepened.

ummm, really pretty. there may be hope for mine yet. I fed it and moved it under the artificial lights. it has 2 new leaves starting. good sign.

Oh boy..something to really get excited about for next year..that is one great picture...Judy

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

I plan on lots of JMG next eyar Grandpapa. They can twine thru my other plants and add some excitement.

Sofi, what a great pciture. It sure darkened up for you . I bet it is real dark next summer. And you seem to have a standard there too!

Lakeland, FL(Zone 9b)

I have Cherub and mines 4 feet tall i got it 2 mnts ago Regards Paul

Northwest, OH(Zone 5b)

*sticks tongue out at Paul*

Wheatfield, NY(Zone 6a)

I want to know where you got it (pretty please?)

Lakeland, FL(Zone 9b)

i got mine of of e bay i think theres one on there now i never buy from parks

Colts Neck, NJ(Zone 7a)

Phicks, I am humbled that you have a two month old, four foot tall plant. I will be looking for some photos of it next season. Maybe yours will live up to the claim that Cherub can have 400 blooms in a season.

Grampapa, I am hoping to get some rooted cuttings from my Cherub and would be glad to send you one to make up for the puny thing that Parks sent you. But I wouldnt give up on your little one just yet!

Wheatfield, NY(Zone 6a)

sofi, that's very sweet of you. I may take you up on it later if this one doesn't make it, but right now I think it still has a fighting chance. I'm taking Kell's advice and it seems to be responding. if I can keep it alive until spring it'll probably be ok.

Paul, you can bet I won't be buying from Park's any more.

gram

Winnipeg, MB(Zone 4a)

Wow!!! Looking even more gorgeous! I think we all need to stick our tongue out at Paul for having a Cherub to begin with and one that is 4 ft for such a short period of time....lol. Another one to add to my wish list.
;p Donna

Sofi, could you be persuaded ot add that last picture to PlantFiles? It is glorious.
K. James

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

I bought one of these this year but it isn't big enough to bloom yet.

Kittrell, NC(Zone 7b)

This is one that I really wanted. I finally got one, and what happened, it stuck it's tongue out at me and then very politely died! LOL!!

Colts Neck, NJ(Zone 7a)

K James, I did attempt to upload the picture but I am not sure if I was successful. Should I get a message saying "your picture successfully submitted" or something? I either uploaded zero pictures or several of the same thing. I will try again in a day or two if I dont see it. My Cherub thanks you for the compliment.

meag848, dmail me if you would like another cutting to try.

Wheatfield, NY(Zone 6a)

Sofi, it takes a couple of days before the admin folks have a chance to review and add it to plantfiles.

My sad little Park's plant has a nice new leaf and seems happier under my grow lights. and I am feeding it as Kell suggested. so things are looking up.
