Hi All,
My Mammoth basil shows no signs of going to seed, Its been flowering for ages though! Is this normal?
Saving Basil Seeds
Flower stems with blooms opening just at the top will often have begun setting seed toward the bottom of the stalk. Look for stalks where the spent blooms have dropped off... the little nubby bits still clinging to the stem are where the seeds form. Are any of those nubby bits looking brown & dried? If so, rub one between your fingers to crumble it, and you'll find small black seeds. If the nubby bit is still green, you should be able to pick it apart and find pale round seeds inside, toward the base. My apologies if you knew all that -- I just wanted to be sure you weren't "missing" the seeds. It does take a while for my basils to go from bud to bloom to seed, and the seeds take a while longer to fully mature.
Great advice, Critter to the rescue again! :-)))))
