I have about 1000 tulips & other spring flowering bulbs plus some lilies Iris & more lilies next spring.
Continuation of Cottage Gardens....
Country, you will be busy, busy, busy!!!! I think I probably have 250 or so bulbs to plant, many of which I will put in pots - I'd be a bit overwhelmed by 1000!!
Looks like the round up did work - I need to use it in a few places, just haven't gotten around to it. Plus it's too wet out this way right now.
The bulbs are all mixed, so I plant the easy method. Dig the whole thing out 6" deep. Lay the tulips & daffidols where I want them on the bottom. Throw in soil to the next depth needed, throw in those bulbs, & so on till done.
wow...1000 tulips! That ought to be a gorgeous display in the spring. Do post pics when they bloom! I think I'd just scrape off the entire bed to the depth you need to plant the tulips. Work in some bone meal, place the bulbs and then put the soil back on, if I were planting that many, rather than dig 1000 little holes. Still I am sure all the work will pay off handsomely. Can't wait till spring to see your pics!
carol
hehehe...simultaneous post. Great minds....
Wow...getting so hard to keep up with this thread. Everyone is posting such wonderful pictures.
It is a bit overwhelming to keep up with, but this has become my favorite new thread/(forum).
I definitely think we need a cottage forum. Already this thread could be divided into MANY different threads. All of which I'd follow. Ü
Neil!! How are you? Glad you dropped in. I always enjoy your photos...they are so "Monet".
-T
Yes, I wish this were abot 10 different threads, too.
I wish you guys sold your plants and plans -- I could just order them and be done with it! LOL!
Suzy
This thread is a might to long, continue here http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/668765/
Bernie
Personally I think we should stick with the thread so admin can track the interest in CGing more easily and give us a forum instead of just a thread.
It's too confusing to keep sending everyone on a follow the leader. When the thread has new posts and comes up on your watch list, open it and click on go to new, then just read what you've missed since your last visit here.
I have been reading and enjoying the pictures. Mercy! I log in in the AM before work, and when I come home there is so much more to read and enjoy. I agree with Jude we need to keep this thread alive so Country Gardens has it's own forum. I can see threads for :Starting a Country Garden, Plant combinations, with pictures of course, Statuary, Maintaining, Putting the country Garden to bed. Tips, not-to-dos, plants not to plant. The list go on.
These pictures will inspire me for the long winter months. I keep seeing plant combo I want to try next year. Thanks to all!
Chris.
Gemini-sage.... I love the lily peeping out through the pink astilbe... Do you have it's name? Looks like it saying "hello...Here I am..."
Notmartha... What an inspiration your pictures are, I keep telling my husband I was going to get rid most of the "lawn" this gives me hope. One blade, or should I say weed at a time. LOL

Maybe admin will add them all together, the criteria is probably number of posts.
Anyone on this thread who has not done so yet, jump over to---->
http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/652468/
And just post that you would be interested in a Cottage Garden Forum, I think they may be taking a count there. That is where this all started.
Then come back here and join in on the fun.
While I'm thinking about it, what annuals do you have in your cottage garden. I want to start growing some from seed in the basement in April 07 and would like some ideas.
Chris
If anyone is serious about starting Monkshood, Veshengo has more varieties than I knew existed. http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/638461/
So many beautiful gardens! I can't wait for next spring!!!
Anybody with dial-up won't be able to keep up if this gets to long. Then you lose your power.
I don't understand anyhow, they been adding forums at hectic pace, why not this one ?
OK, how about starting a thread for complaints only to admin stating we want a cottage garden forum. explain in the first post that dial up folks are having trouble with this thread because it's so darned long.
You never know, it might help and I don't think it could hurt.. do you?
lady, I've been thinking about annuals, too. zinnia, marigolds, cosmos, nasturtiums, snapdragons, bush morning glory, impatiens. that's what's on my list so far. oh, and basil, parsley, dill.
I try to have different types of flowers like: spiky, flat, bushy, open, and colors that are pleasing next to their neighbor and then the tiered planting. I don't like tall plants in the front, it drives me crazy if they get taller than the ones behind them. It is a challenge to do cottagy, but well worth it and the journey is fun....most of the time lol.
I have Alyssum, Snaps, Poppies and Dianthus that I planted for fall and winter.
does anyone at this thread understand what's going on that there is now a cottage gardening thread #3?
I simply don't get it. I had thought the idea was to keep us all together so admin would see the need to open a CG forum, now we're splintering off into groups? That's really too bad. I'm afraid it will hurt our chances for a forum in the long run, rather than help if that was the intention.
Annuals for Cottage Gardens
It's very confusing, I'll dmail admin and see if they can make a suggestion. Terry has always been very helpful.
Terry IS very helpful!!! Applause, Terry!
I just went through the 'contact us' area, I'm not sure who is working and hopefully they will give us some direction.
Terry rocks!!!
Darn it -- I had a whole long post for Chris & Gram and it didn't post. I might have gotten too fancy with my cool header about Annuals in the Cottage Garden :((.
It was about Annuals that say "Cottage Garden". I want poppies and Hollyhocks -- Two I've never grown before. Ialso thought Nasturtiums would be appropriate.
Basil & Tomatoes (no room for veggies that are there just for looks, we'd actually eat and harvest these. I would love some pole beans...green beans that grow up a tee pee made of sticks. Mr. Clean might balk though...he prefers fancy black wrought iron to scraggly pea stakes LOL!
Jude, I think we know the other thread is there.
Suzy
Simple go to the new thread. Dialup people are there.
Bernie
Thanks, Bernie, I thought that was the case.
ladygardener, the lily peeking from behind the astilbe is 'Triumphetor'. That view is what made me run in and get the camera.
Thanks Taylor! Love the Monet imagery!
I went back and looked and this is what Terry recommended.
This is for anyone that was confused as I was with all the CG threads......
I may make a suggestion?
Instead of using this thread (which we will monitor for new posts expressing interest in this forum), I would encourage you to start a thread (or two or three...however many questions or topics you'd like to discuss) in another forum. Perhaps in Garden Talk or Perennials.
I suggest that for three reasons:
1) It makes it easier for us to watch this thread for interest (sorting through a lot of posts from the same folks makes it harder); and
2) Starting threads in one of those forums will help everyone: you, us, others - see if there really is enough substance on this topic to sustain a forum of its own; and
3) If/when a new Cottage Garden is formed, we can then move those threads to their new home, so whatever you discuss isn't lost, but instead forms the foundation for your new forum.
thanks fly-girl. Now just have to find them all to mark them for watch list.
HJ, there's one in Perennials.....the hard part is remembering what I said in each one so I don't repeat it lol
No kidding - I am so confused I'm starting to be reluctant to post!
Does anyone have a current count on the number of CG threads?
I'm afraid of missing out on great tips, specific plants or those wonderful pics everyone i posting.
Maybe the confusion itself will prompt admin to open the darned foram already
I only watch 60 of the 195 forums. I might be missing something.
What is the problem with a new forum when there is so much interest. Some forums that are on don't get much traffic.
Bernie
60! Wow, I couldn't keep up with that many lol
Here's my count: 2 in Garden Talk, 1 in Dave's Garden (the original), and 1 in Perennials. Am I missing any?
Well, I've been watching the Cottage Gardening forums and am excited for next year. My blang digital garden is on the lurch and missing in action! Our temperatures have been so warm for the past few days, that some bulbs have broken through a small bed of yellow pansies! LOL, another reminder as to why gardening is so fun and a great learning experience! ;0)
I understand.

That's not discussed here. To many trips to Disneyland.
gemini_sage Thanks! I made a note of the pink and white Lily name I have not seen the name before. It really goes nice with the astillbe, and the blue geranium. Do you have trouble controling the gooseneck? Mine took over the south -east part of my corner garden till it met the sidewalk.
Chris
Our wait is over. Terry announced we have our own Cottage Garden Forum now. :-)
