WHOA.......a huge lantana!!!

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

I love driving around Berkeley, I always see the most fun plants. I didn't know lantana got so big. Now I have to figure out which one it is.

I thought you guys would like to see it also.

WOW!

(Tammie) Odessa, TX(Zone 7b)

That is amazing! The largest I have seen was about 4 ft high and 8 fr across... this one blows that completely away... and so beautiful! Thank you for sharing.

Missouri City, TX(Zone 9a)

Wow! I have never seen anything like that!

Niceville, FL(Zone 8b)

Good heavens!!! I have that one and it is only about two feet tall. I do trim it back frequently because it does grow fast. Hmmm, I may have to let it go just to see how big it will get. Certainlly not that big!

Raleigh, NC(Zone 7b)

Kell, it looks like it is in a container on top of a pole? Was it? I have never seen a lantana grow like that before, but I could see a trailing lantana like a sunset grow that way on a pole. It sure is blooming a lot!!

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

My word that is HUGE!!!! The color looks a bit dark but could it be a Miss Huff? They tend to live so long. Do you think have been pruning the width of that plant? It is certainly not in proportion to the height.

Katy, TX(Zone 8b)

That is fantastic!! I wouldn't care what kind it was as long as it bloomed and grew that beautifully.

WOW!!!

Are you trying to get us plantlovers to move to California? ;-)

Robert.

Novato, CA

Kell,
I have this lantana planted in Marin County in full sun and it is a very fast grower.
It is only about 3, maybe 4 years old and is about 6 feet tall.
I have to cut it back several times a year to keep it from eating a Tibouchina and a Queen palm tree.
It already has eaten a phlomis fruticosa and devoured a phormium.

It was planted from a 4 inch container from Emerisa Nursery and if my memory is correct I believe the name was L. confetti.

Hollywood, FL(Zone 10b)

Oh, that is gorgeous!

Thanks for the info, deviant; I think I'll have to find this one!

~Gina

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

Around here Confetti is the one with colors from pale yellow to pink to lavendar. It grows wild on the beaches here and tends to stay a lot shorter than that monster in Kell's photo.

Besides having the best nurseries, it seems everything grows larger inCalifornia. I'm with Raydio and ready to move west.

Hollywood, FL(Zone 10b)

Having looked it up, I know which one Confetti is now, and I've never seen a Confetti as floriferous as that in the pic is... I've seen them grow big and bushy, but never seen them grow quite like that (that one looks like it's clinging to the building's column). The color definitely looks more orange there, but I've been fooled by a 'Confetti' from a distance. :)

Raleigh, NC(Zone 7b)

Its definitely not Confetti, and I don't think its Miss Huff as that has some pink in it like Tangerine. Sunset is a trailing and is very orange/red. That is what I think this one is, but I think it is in a container.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

I was so blown away too. Lali, Begoniacrazii here, was following me to a nursery for I have the GPS. She got stuck at a red light. I was going up the street looking for a place to pull over to wait for her and then I saw this tree across the street. My mouth went open. I pulled over, jumped out of the car and ran across the street. So afraid Lali would come by and not see me and keep going.

Oh deviant_deziner. I have been to Emerisa Nursery. It is on Zuzu's (of rose fame here) hit parade tour. LOL

I was thinking they had painted the house to match the lantana. LOL. I do not think it was on a form, but it was so dense who knows what was in the center.

There are so many new lantana out now, it may be hard to ID. I will google all your suggestions. THANKS! Here is a close up. I was in such a hurry and it was pouring rain at that moment so the shot is not great and kind of dark. But good enough for a look at the flower and maybe it will help with an ID.

It could be 'Radiation'--that cultivar is a little bit older and has been around long enough that they could have had the plant long enough for it to get that big. I've seen other large ones that I think are 'Radiation', nothing quite this impressive though! 'Radiation' tends to just have orange/yellow, 'Confetti' is paler colored, more pink & yellow rather than so much orange.

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

Just started Googling lantanas and there is such a tremendous difference in the colors between different sites and especially here in the Plantfiles. I would surely be surprised if all those photos under Radiation were the same plant.

I looked at both Niche Gardens and Plant Delights for Miss Huff and their photos weren't even close - although the nurseries are. My Miss Huff was more like the one pictured at www.nichegardens.com. Plant Delights was much more orange.

Kell, I have this hilarious image of you running out in the rain, watching for Lali and avoiding other cars while you were taking that picture.

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

that is simply unbelievable! I love lantanas, such an easy plant. I have seen one recently that I need to get. Leaves are variegated white/green and flower is pink/yellow. Kinda like a variegated Lantana camara. Must have!

Winnipeg, MB(Zone 4a)

Wow, that's amazing!!! Awesome!!

Raleigh, NC(Zone 7b)

vossner, that might be Tropical Fruit that you saw. It stays pretty low.

Northern California, CA(Zone 9a)

It really was a 'man eating' lantana! by the time I caught up with Kell, I saw her standing in the rain trying (now there's a die-hard gardener for ya!) not to get to close to this little shop of horrors Lantana!
It's really amazing in person (but from afar! LOL)

SE Arky, United States(Zone 8a)

Is there a 'Dallas' lantana, or is that another plant I'm thinking of???? That is one more huge plant!!

Norwalk, IA(Zone 5b)

Lantana on steroides..LOL

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

The very BEST HONEY I have ever had in my whole (and that is a BIG word) life was from bees visiting Lantana exclusively!!! It was incredible...so incredible that 10 years later it makes me drool!!!! Tell those folks to get some hives!!!!

Hiouchi, CA(Zone 8b)

i have seen the common orange lantana growing up italian cypress as high as 25 maybe 30 ft in So.Calif

Close SherryLike, it is Dallas Red, I love it!

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

OK, I don't get it but I want to: what varieties of Lantana climb? I just may need to have one of those.

Dublin, CA(Zone 9a)

I don't think any of them really climb--Lantana camara cultivars tend to be shrubby (some of them very large like this one, most of the time not quite so massive!), and Lantana montevidensis is trailing so I suppose you could train it up something if you want but it'll need some help.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

You know Voss, I saw Dallas Red and it sure looks like it but it says in PlantFiles it is only 36 to 48 inches tall. Hi Sherry, good to see you here! We miss you on the Brug Forum.

Oh Dick what sight that must be when it is in full flower.

That is weird that lantana makes such good honey, Carol. I actually dislike its smell. And it is rather strong.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY ECRANE3!!!

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

Kell, I was thinking the same thing about that Lantana honey. The odor of the leaves is so acrid but I have to admit I never got up close and personal with the flowers.

Lantanas are like weeds around here, you just can't kill 'em but most upright ones only get to be about 4' tall.
Your Little Shop of Horrors Lantana is fascinating.

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

I love that weird lantana smell.

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

(chin resting on desk, eyes bulged out)- That is unbelieveable! I love how spontaneous you are Kell, thanks for getting wet, risking missing Lali and your life to get the pic. Reminds me of relative of cousin It.

Dublin, CA(Zone 9a)

Kell--thanks for the b-day wishes! (I got one of those Tibouchinas from Magic Gardens as my present to myself!)

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

Tigerlily123, I bought the var. lantana today and the tag said Greg Grant.

Dublin, CA(Zone 9a)

I may have to look for that one--I bought a variegated one a year or two ago but it had plain yellow flowers that I didn't think looked very good with the foliage but one with pink and yellow flowers would look really cool!

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

I have a variegated yellow, called Samantha, I luv it!

In fact, I am slowly but surely building a collection of lantana, and the main reason is because I love seeing the butterlies hover over the lantanas, any color.

I have yet to find the lantana that ate the house, like Kell has...

Raleigh, NC(Zone 7b)

Vossner, I will have to look for that one. I grew the Tropical Fruit this year, and it was var. with pink/yellow. I think they are finally expanding it past the Samantha. Just looked in my plants and plugs catalog and didn't see it. It must be really new. Does the tag say how high it grows?

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

tag didn't have size info and I think you're right, it is a new one. here is a pic of one I bought for a buddy. It doesn't strike me as being a trailer.

Raleigh, NC(Zone 7b)

Vossner, it does look like it's going to get large, and its doing the same thing as Tropical Fruit-loosing the varigation on some of the branches.
