Being in California, I just love Armstrong Gardens and their magazine "California Gardener". They've got an ad for a foliar feeder "Eleanor's VF-11", and I was wondering if, #1, has anyone used this? And #2, is this similar (or better than or not as good as) Messenger and Spray and Grow? I don't know how to insert a hyperlink in here, but the website for the product is http://www.vf-11plantfood.com/. I've been wanting to try Messenger, but if this is the same thing, maybe I'll just pick this up at Armstrong instead. We've had some pretty drastic winds here lately, and after that totally bizarro storm we had about a month ago (only hit about 1 square mile in north-end San Bernardino), my plants are kind of looking like they've been beat up :-(
Any comments would be appreciated! Thanks :-)
Eleanor's VF-11?
To answer #1, I've never used it so unfortunately can't share any personal experience. To answer #2, it is not at all the same type of thing as Messenger--Messenger is a hormone that stimulates an immune response in plants that causes them to grow bigger/lusher/have more blooms, but it provides no nutrients at all, so if you use it you also still need to use a fertilizer. Without reading the actual labels of the products I can't tell if Eleanor's and Spray and Grow are the same type of product or not--I suspect they're a bit different since Eleanor's calls itself a plant food and SnG talks about being like vitamins for your plants. My guess is that Eleanor's has more of your standard NPK fertilizer and SnG has more of the micronutrients, but before you run out and use both of them on your plants you should definitely read the labels and understand what's in each of them so you're not accidentally doubling up on your fertilizer. I also think (although I can't remember where I read this) that foliar fertilizers are not as effective, you may need to use a regular fertilizer to feed through the roots as well. I'm not positive on that last part though since I can't remember the source of the info!
