Fothergilla seed

Cincinnati, OH(Zone 6b)

Has anybody here ever gotten fruit and seed from their fothergilla? My plants, two different cultivars, possibly two different species, have never produced any seed. Lots of flowers, occasionally an empty seed (what?) nodule, but never any seed. I was commenting on this with a friend of mine while we were out touring different gardens, so we made a conscience effort to check every fothergilla we came across, and, again, we never found any with seeds.

Could this be an issue of self-incompatibility, as with viburnums, an issue with unpredictable spring weather while they are in bloom, or is this plant just a reluctant fruit producer? Anyone know?

Also, is there an easy way to identify Fothergilla major from Fothergilla gardenii. Truthfully, I've never viewed them together or observed them carefully enough to tell them apart.

I don't have any seeds on my Mt. Airy and have never noticed any other years.

Odd question. I never paid attention until you posted this. I don't have any seed either or I would have tried germinating my own. I know it's a double dormancy seed though.

F. major has leaves that are the same shape but about twice the size of gardenii. F. major grows to about twice the size of gardenii which hangs out at around 2' - 2.5'. F. gardenii seems to enjoy being planted by my wetlands while major prefers it dryer. I've got the gardenii planted by the Cephalanthus. Both like part shade. There has got to be an easier way to differentiate between the two other than by comparing size of the leaves. What it is I don't know because the leaves look identical to me. Keep your tags on your plants is about all I can say.

Here's a link to information I pulled up from Google-
