No eggs, hmmmmm

I was going through the sacks again and what do you suppose I found? A nest of a dozen rotten eggs. No telling how many months they had been covered up there. I also found another "nest" of 8 eggs. I knew they were good because i found them in a spot I had cleaned out not long back. I floated them when I got home just to be on the safe side.

Hey I have been lurking here a while, what does floating mean CanjuninKy? I remember reading somewhere that you can tell if an egg is good by putting it in a glass of water if it sinks is it good or bad? Am I assuming to much, like what your name means, if it means what I thnks it means I am cajuninSLC............aka.....

You have got to tell me which bayou you come from and how you left. I lived in Dulac on Bayou Grand Caillou. I was raised on the Northshore 6 miles east of Madisonville on Hwy 22. We are ministers and that is how we found ourselves in Ky. We like it here a lot.

Floating eggs is the best way to test them if you have any doubts. My mom breaks hers into a saucer but if it is rotten, you have to smell it that way. If you fill a bowl with cold tap water and put the eggs in it, the good ones will sink to the bottom and rest on their sides. If they stand on end or float they are not good and should be thrown away. I throw them in the creek if they float but if they stand on end, I feed them to our pet possum, Jolie' Pas. She loves them.

Bury them in the rose garden! The sulfur that occurs when they explode protects roses from black spot. Just be sure and bury them deep enough. I put a whole one at the bottom of the hole whenever I plant a rose. (Yes, along with a banana peel and some coffee grounds and no I'm not pulling your collective leg!)

I knew about the coffee grounds but not the rest of it. I'll have to tell my Mom. She is about to plant 3 Rio Samba roses. Thanks for the tip.

It looks like the girls are back ! Yesterday I got 2 eggs, today 3. We had a beautiful sunshiney day yesterday. I guess they noticed too.

That's so strange to me that they layed all last winter, then just stopped this winter.

Anyone else notice their hens starting to lay more now that days are lengthening ?

Woo Hoo for your girls Peggy!!!

My girls have been picking up the pace since Dec. We're up to
six to seven eggs a day for the twelve hens now. Up from 1-2 a
