Easter Lilies

San Jose, CA(Zone 9a)

Hi,

I'm reserving a few spots for white lilies and a good candidate for the front/mid border seems to be the easter lily (Longiflorum Hybrid or Trumpet). However, I can't find bulbs under this name at the mail order suppliers. Are the bulbs sold under a different name? Is this a good choice for a smaller size lily in zone 9? The shape of the easter lily is classic trumpet which adds to its appeal.

For the rear of bed I've chosen a Casablanca lily. I have found at least one supplier that carries these.

Also, the problem I'm running into is that many large retailers have a min purchase amount and I completely understand this but sometimes you just have to have that certain one... They should keep records of your purchases and waive the min if you are a repeat customer.

Is there any mail order company which is likely to have both of these?

Thanks

Have you tried BuggyCrazy.com. I ordered some lily bulbs from her, and they are huge. If it is not listed on her web site, you can e-mail her and ask. I think you will love her bulbs.

I would agree with that. If you e-mail Lisa from Buggy Crazy , she may have recommendations for you and her stock is wonderful! You can order any amount of bulbs, even 1, if you so choose. She has a good variety to choose from , as well.

Brent and Becky carries one Longiflorum called Snow Queen. It's the only one I can think of now that is not a cross. Personally, I like the Longiflorum Asiatic crosses (LA) alot and they do have some very nice white ones. White Tycoon is one I can think of that is very nice. There are also some Longiflorum Trumpet crosses called Longipets, but I'm not personally aware of any white ones.

I highly recommend the LAs. Once established, a patch should bloom for two or more weeks. They have they hardiness of asiatics and multiple well.

I have hard time with B&B's website. The search often does not work (I think it only searches certain fields) and when you go to the genus list -> lilium you only get 21 results and they are not listed by division as they are in tulips. I just assumed they did not specialize in lilies.

Try this link and click on Lilium Longiflorum.

Thanks,

That lily is a great fit - the only reason I was hooked on the easter lily is because I saw it in a gardening magazine near the front of the border (2-3' tall). I already purchased some Casablanca lilies but those are for the back of the border.

I have an Easter Lily that has lived 2 winters outside here now. It was just a blooming one I bought for my Mom to enjoy. I trimmed the blooms and plopped it into the ground that spring. It bloomed in fall the first year. This year, it bloomed with all my other shorter lilies. Love the scent.

Does anyone have longiflorum that has lasted more than 3 years in the garden? Just wondering as I've heard they are not long lived. Also, I suspect they are not as hardy as asiatics or LAs, so would need extra protection in zone 4 and colder.

Mom had some in a protected South corner that lasted most of my childhood. We just added a new one each year after the Easter festivities. I notice the new owners raised Mom's beds and covered the beds with rocks. Typical.

Wanda, Oh how I hate to see that happen. What are people thinking......?? Hopefully the rocks aren't PINK!

White limestone between toasted, tortured little bushes. Sad. And I tended those beds for 4 decades.

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

Ugh, the next worst thing to pink is white! It must be torture going by that place after years and years of hard work. Poor, Wanda.

Well, I grew up out in the country with lots of room for kids to run. Now it is filled with big houses and over-done landscaping.

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

Wanda, it has happened everywhere. It's very sad to see. And I would choose, poorly or lack of landscaping. Many folks are turf lovers too.

Speaking of pink rocks, it reminds of of something my MIL did many years ago. She obtained a large boulder for her front yard and it looked OK sitting there. A few weeks later we drove up and there it was bright pink. Looked like a wad of bubblegum sitting on the grass. But she liked it and pink it remained.

I guess if we were all the same, life might be kind of boring, huh, Beak? That sounds like a giant wad of bubble gum. Did she really have it painted? She must really like pink....

Barbie Rocks? Our daughters used to put glue and glitter and paint on 2 big rocks on either side of our driveway. Very colorful and unusual.

Columbia Heights, MN(Zone 4a)

I believe she painted it herself. It's the only oddball thing I remember her doing. At least in the yard.

My Mom's favorite color is pink. But she would never do anything like that.

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

My 9 year old doughter , when she was 5 or 6 used to do the pink paint on rocks with glitter, but then she was a big rock hound. So what your saying, Beak, is that this type of behavior might not go away? Uh-oh.

My MIL, now passed on, along with the pink boulder, lived in a very small northern Minnesota town, population 200 something. My husband and I spent a lot of time there fishing and hunting and the curb appeal in the general area was fairly amusing. While my MIL had her pink boulder, it was nothing in comparison to how most of the houses were painted; bright orange to lavender and every oddball color in between. In defense of my MIL, she did have a very pretty white house with forrest green trim. So, it could have been worse.

Hmmmm. A white house with dark green trim and a large pink boulder in front.

I think that about says it all right there!
