We've had a good amount of rain (but I'm not complaining). The strap leaves on my eucomis are flat, the plants look like somebody sat on them. is this from too much water? thanks for your help.
what's happened to my pineapple lilies?
voss, perhaps someone, or 'thing' did sit on them!
Is this the first time you have grown them? Mine are still green and looking lush, but at this time of year they do tend to flatten a little, cold weather (if you're having any) may be to blame. They do die back for winter. I've not know rain to bother them much, if they are in the ground and well drained they cope better than in pots but should be about 6" deep.
When I first started mine off in the spring a few years ago now, I had them in the greenhouse. Any heat made them flop but they were OK once I planted them. They have self seeded around, all the spare gaps around my lilies and delphiniums are now filled in.
I took a pic a couple of days ago
Mine look exactly the same...its driving me nuts. I thought maybe i planted them to shallow. Just today, I dumped the pot to get the bulbs, and start over. The bulbs looked good. Same thing happened to the ones in the ground. By the time i went to dig them...no bulbs left. Both pot and ground planted at the same time. Ones in the ground were in the bed inside the screen, so it wanst animals. I do want to try again. I loved them when they bloomed.
We have Eucomis in the botanical garden where I volunteer. They come up profusely every year and look wonderful for a short while. Then the leaves just seem to go flat and lay all over the ground. I've seen this for the last 4 years, since I started there. I keep forgetting to ask the horticulturist why they do that.
pekasky, pls, pretty please ask him/her.
Janet mine look like your pic. I palnted the bulbs2 years ago. they didn't grow very well the 1st year, but this 2nd year they grew nice and big, except now they have that "somebody sat on me" look, lol. THey've been like that for more than a week. not one bit of yellow or brown, just lush green, but almost as flat as a pancake.
I also wondered if mine weren't deep enough.
I'll try to remember to ask when I go up on Tuesday. What you just described is exactly the way ours look too.
Marilyn
I forgot to put this in my watch!
voss, they will start to die back soon so they really have to start looking flat sometime! If yours flopped suddenly after a heavy rain then they might need more drainage, but if they grew well this year and you've had them in 2 years they should be OK.
I'm not sure they go yellow or brown slowly, they possibly just wait for a frost to knock them back although I seem to remember seeing them looking yellowish. Cooler temps will start them into dormancy, don't worry!
OK, then, I will hope for the best. thanks
they do that when you plant them but will come back next year better, dont give up on them yet
That's really about what they should be looking like coming into the cold weather, but I'm not sure how cold yours is at the moment. They do look lush enough, not lacking at all.
I find mine don't like too much heat, they do like to be in a semi-shaded spot in the ground, moist and well drained. I wonder if they cope with competition from tree roots, but you did say that it had just rained heavily. If you could find a slightly more shaded spot they might cope better. (I know they are under a tree but it looks sunny)
Mine are shaded quite a lot by the Horse Chestnut tree, but get filtered sun morning and afternoon. They are not under the canopy of the tree.
