Are they slow or fast growers..I'd like to know because I want them for shade..I already have a few of the dawn redwood annd 1 ginko...Ijust need to know where to plant them and if I want fast shade if I should plant a different kind of tree or trees where I want the shade...Thanks ahead of time
Does anyone know how fast Ginkgo's and Dawn Redwood's grow?
The Dawn Redwood will grow fairly quickly with adequate moisture but the Ginkgo will grow slow.
Approximately 3-6 inches once or twice a year for a Ginkgo, and at least twice as fast with the dawn redwood. Both are on the fast side in youth and slow down at say 15 or 20 feet.
Thank you both very much..Now that I know how fast they grow...I know where to plant them...:-) Thanks again,Jody
Dawn Redwoods I have known will grow 3' plus per year, easy...at least in their youth. Gingkos are the most frustratingly slow growing things I have ever known...at least in their youth. Seedlings seem to do nothing. A large tree I have got seems to put on a foot a year or so.

Interesting info..thanks again..:-)
I recall that someone( can't remember who) posted that a ginkgo might grow a lot faster if it has a certain nutrient.
I wonder what it is...I'll have to look at some ginkgo site..maybe they will have more info on it..thanks for the aditional information..I'd like them to grow fast I won't be around long enough to see them get big...hopefully another 30-40 years though..lol..
opps tried to fix spelling and ended up posting twice..

I don't know much about trees but I do really like them..lol..we have 43 acres and I'd like to have lots of trees..we have about 18 acres of woods now..but I'd like to have special trees not native to IL.
Anyway I found this is this the nutrient?? "The roots of most Ginkgos are infected by vesicular-arbuscular mycorrhizae (VAM) that play an important role in the uptake of the element phosphorus. "
There's alot of info here..:-)

I also found this...
"It is also grown for its shade (little shade when it's young). It is particularly easy to establish in the garden.
It initially grows somewhat slowly: it takes 10 to 12 years to become 6 metres (20 feet) tall and it takes about 20 years before it has a rounded shape. "
