Gab.. Choke.... Pewuuieeeee

I been cleaning oodles of Ginkgo biloba seeds and glad that nasty chore is done. What I noticed this morning while looking at them to see if they were dry enough to package and store is that I have two different colored type seeds from the same tree.

Some of the seeds look a light carmel color and others look like a white. Has anybody else noticed this? Could it be possible to tell the male and the female from the color of the seed coat?

Doubt it. More likely something to do with how much stain there is from the pulp juice.

Or, if they're viable or not. Put a bunch in a bucket of water and see if seeds of one color float while the other color sinks.

Didn't think about the idea of pulp juice and gonna test the float idea. Thank you very much!! : )

I noticed the same thing when I did the seed but I found, once dried, they become white. I also found cleaning the seed with bare hands left my hands rough as if it took off a layer.

Be careful with the pulp. Even the slightest exposure causes me severe itching to areas of sensitive skin. Read more into this if you wish, but say accidentally getting some pulp on my hands, and then rubbing my eyes, will leave me with itchy eyes for a week.

Just curious~ why do you save oodles of ginkgo seeds?

To late with your warning Growin. I didn't realize about the problems with the pulp til after I was done and was hunting more information on them.

My right hand which I manily used to rub all the pulp off with is dry as done and rought and looks like it trying to peel a layer of skin too.

I was talking with one of the genetic professors this morning and was wondering if there was a way genetically from looking at the embroyos inside if it would be possible to determine the sex. She said they had been doing some work in finding the dna marker for them, but she didn't know how far along they were, so I guess when these guys grow they gonna get grafted.

SallyG... I collect oodles of anything I can get usually. First because I like to do alot of experimentation and you need at least 5 seeds for each rep. Second some to share or trade for other things I would like and not available here. Third to grow myself and learn to graft em. Fourth, so if I want I can sell a few seeds to pay for my addiction to playing in the dirt and growing plants and trees and shrubs. A very addictive habit and expensive one, especilly when there are alot of enablers on the forums. LOL
