Pinus heldreichii var. leucodermis

Elburn, IL(Zone 5a)

I couldn't pass up this tree on sale today. Excellent dark green color, dense needle clusters, plenty of cones, good form. Now, can someone comment on its suitability in Zone 5 Northern Illinois? Is it going to croak like all the Austrian and Scots pines? Diseases to look out for? I hope its suitable for my climate and will have a long life!

Nobody? Coniferites where are you?

Eau Claire, WI

They apparently detest the conditions found in greater Chicago. I've heard, though, that they do exceedingly well in west-central Wisconsin, and would be willing to take it off your hands and save you the frustration of another failed Pine. ;))

Try it and see what happens!

The variety 'leucodermis' is no longer considered distinct, it is just Pinus heldreichii.

Kevin,

We have grown P. heldrechii in the field for a number of years with some burn in only the worst of winters. Other than that we've not encountered any problems on clay soils or with the plagues of 2 needled pines. To be fair, we have some old Scots Pine nearby that are unfazed also. I just picked up some of the smaller forms from Iseli for spring 07. It should be worth a trial in Chicago given its merits.

Regards,
Ernie
