Cunninghamia lanceolata

Oh man! You are good! You hit it on the head other than that this is the cultivar ''Chason's Gift'.

Oh, can't say I know that cultivar and it's nice!

This is a really beatiful tree...and this one from plant files, these cones are something else

I particularly liked the cones on this. They were really set off by the variegation in the leaves. Nice photo you found in the PlantFiles.

What is meant by 'root hardy in zone 6b' ? It would die back, and you'd just have that year's new growth?

A bad winter will kill it to the ground, and it will then re-grow from stump sprouts. Inbetween bad winters, it could get fairly large, given a run of milder winters.

Here's what a 2 year old seedling looks like!......It's in a 1 gallon container.

Your 2 year old seedling looks really great. How did you propagate it?

Actually, I "Plucked" a few out from under a large parent tree at the Biltmore Estate in Asheville, NC.......there were hundreds being held "Hostage" under the dense, dark canopy with little chance of further development!

Ah ha ha! I know exactly where you plucked that from. We just stayed there. One of their horticulturists helped me liberate a cutting of a plant that was being stepped on in their conservatory. I just had to point out to them that it was being stepped on and that the hangy draggy piece was calling out to me to be taken home to be rooted and evidently the gal tending to the plants understood my need to nurture. I couldn't just leave it there to be trampled. I got to talking to the biologists and the horticulturists at the NC Arb and they pointed out a few plants of interest to me that I was able to collect seed from. I also picked up a sprig of Beautyberry from JC Raulston's Arb. I'm a little concerned about that sprig though as it sort of looked as if it had been laying on the ground for quite a while so we'll see if anything germinates from that after people walked on it. I really wanted the 'Welch's Pink' they had but there was nothing laying on the ground so I had to pass it up. Not that it would come true from seed but what the heck. I'm going to try to buy that plant from them at their spring sale.

Is it my imagination or is Biltmore beginning to be overrun with bamboo and a host of other ickies? Holy moly great balls of fire! That place was so beautiful 15-20 years ago when we first stayed there and now it looks as if it is under seige in quite a few areas.
