Planting blueberries now?

Aurora, CO(Zone 5a)

Gurney's is having a great sale on blueberry bushes. But it's October! Could I plant them now? Put them in containers? Keep them outside or take them inside in the house or the garage?

I'd love to have blueberries, but dead blueberries aren't much fun.

They're having a sale on garlic, too.

Northern varieties of blueberries (Vaccinium) are very hardy. Wild Lingonberries (Vaccinium vitis-ideae minor) make a nice groundcover. They are $4.5 each here. Mine were blooming when they arrived. The European domestic Lingonberry (Vaccinium vitis-ideae) are slightly taller, but still a groundcover. The hot cultivars are Masovia and Ida. They bloom twice. Commercial operations pull them off with a blueberry rake after the second crop ripens.

Say UUallace, I am curious to know how ANY selections of Lingonberry grow in the Cincinnatti area. I don't know about Europe, but in north America that species is a plant of far northern forests, cool bogs -- generally not a plant I would think would prosper or even survive in the Cincinnati area. I have seen it in the wild in Ontario N of Lake Superior and I think even in one place in N Michigan where it is very rare

They are plentiful in Canada. They don't seem to mind our hot summers.

I was more worried about Colorado's cold winters. Especially if I'm going to plant them in October or November.

But it is hard to pass up a bargain....
