Aesculus flava

Peoria, IL

This past weekend I ran into 2 trees labeled Aesculus flava. One was developing nice fall color while the other was dying off a brownish green. Anybody have any personal experience with the tree? How well does the foliage hold up in your area? Thanks in advance.

Were you running around Louisville? Or being bored at Spring Grove Cemetery?

I'll try to get by the nice stands we have (one group at Seneca Park with 70 year old trees, the other similarly aged in Portland) and see what is going on in 2006. Those usually have a pleasant pumpkin orange with some golds/yellows/cardboard sprinkled in.

I have a dozen or so seedlings (of IN origin) in the yard which tend to defoliate earlier especially in our drier summers. All exhibit colors in the range of what yours shows to what I've described.

mine always defoliate very early (totally gone now) and leaf out early. Color is like yours and many many nuts this year (to the point of not being able to walk). Some of mine leaf out red and others green....don't know why and neither does smarty pants.

Ah, Professor Aesculus emerges!

At least I'd be willing to trial the seedlings and document the results (if given a sporting chance). These are plants are woefully underproduced (at least around the ORV) and rather easy to sprout from the seed (if collected and sown before drying/shrinkage).

Could be a cottage industry to support the insatiable gardening addiction...

There is a gorgeous Aesculus flava on my drive home from work. I stopped by today to get some pictures. Unfortunately, the shot I really wanted to get was blurry. I'll include it here. You will get the idea that this foliage is clean and brilliantly yellow. I think quality of fall color and foliage in general is fairly varied with this species.

Thanks for the info everyone. Some of the red foliaged ones (spring) sound interesting. I like to Aesculus glabra leaf out since many of them have a nice plum color to them. Aesculus flava is not common in Central IL.

Well the one that started out with new red growth later turned green just like the others...???
