Mulberries

Cincinnati, OH(Zone 6b)

In a recent thread there was a very brief discussion of mulberries, primarily telling exotic whites from native reds. It seems to me the difference had something to do with hairs on the top or bottom leaf surfaces. If a mulberry has got a rough top surface, will this indicate which mulberry it is? If so, which is it?

My book says paper and red mulberry are 'sandpapery' on top, with red being hairy beneath and paper being velvety beneath. White is not hairy beneath.

Scott,

Have you ruled out Broussonetia? The few M. rubra that I have seen tend to be more sandpapery than M. alba.
