ginger lilies?

Cordele, GA(Zone 8a)

I just received some ginger lily plants from a friend, at least that is what she called them. They are very tall, require some staking, blooms are white and they smell like gardenias. Extremely fragrant. I could smell them just as we were walking towards them.
It looks like the root system is a rhizone and not a bulb. Is this a lily in the true since of the word? Also, what tips can you give me on maintaining and growing these luscious plants.

Nope, not a true lily. The reason many things have 'lily' in their names is because they are lily-like ~ meaning that their parts come in groups of 6 (or 3), 6 petals, 6 stamens, etc. There's your nugget of useless information for the day. :)

True lilies are a cooler region plant and ginger lilies like the warmer climes. If you don't get any good info here you might try the Bulbs forums, or a southern regional or Texas forum. Good luck and enjoy, wish we could grow them here!

Thank you!, that sums it up pretty good for me.

Oh good grief! Lilies have 6 stamens, and 1 pistil. I'll have to edit the post above...

LOL, Moby you are too funny! Deb, you can plant the ginger in the ground or in a pot and wait to put it out next year...I have all of mine in the ground. You most likely have a butterfly ginger, that is just heavenly when in bloom. I love them!

I just received a butterfly ginger, I potted it up, so what can I expect. It still had leaves, so I would imagine that the leaves will drop, and the plant go dormant? Then do I plant it out next spring? Thanks for any comments.

That is what I did Dcat...I received some in trades last year and potted them, because I couldn't get out to plant them...and just left them on the porch till spring, and planted them then. They were smaller so they didn't bloom this year, but all of them had nice leaves and grew well. They are very resilient. There is a Ginger forum also.
