I asked this on another thread, esw's but didn't get many responses so I'm posting it on a new thread.
I'm wondering who ordered the private harvest superbum from B&D for 24.95?
I got mine and I was disappointed in the size, I'm not familiar with what the regular size for this lily is, but for a lily that's been in the ground for 8 yrs and for 24.95, I expected something HUGE.
Maybe the 7" circumfrence is typical of what "private harvest" should be? I don't know.
I welcome comments on this.
Maureen
Did you order "private harvest " superbum?
Perhaps comparing yours with someone who ordered the Superbum 3 pack from them or just another vendor besides B & D Lilies. I'd say you could e-mail Lisa of Buggy Crazy and she might have an idea , but then again, everything she grows is huge. Just a thought.
Excellent suggestion, magnolia. Lisa would be happy to give her input on this. Don't forget to mention what you payed for it.
Since Lisa always lists hers by diameter it might be best to measure that way.
Hi Magnolia, Pardalium and Moby. Thank you all for your suggestions. I think I'm going to just drop it and not ask Lisa. She's probably busy with her business, and her bulbs are always so big so how can I compare anyone else's to her's. In the future, I won't be buying any private harvest bulbs from b&d for 25.00.

Seriously Maureen, I would let them know of your disappointment. They like to know these things, especially if it has diappointed you, as a customer. $25 is a lot to pay and not be happy.
OK then I'll ask her. I'll see her next week....
I'm eager to hear what she says. I'm inclined to think that these bulbs we received are pretty huge as Buggycrazy lists most of her species lilies at 1-2 inches across. One of my bulbs was about 4 inches and the other a bit smaller. If we're unaccustomed to seeing the size of species bulbs, disappointment is probably natural.
Can you imagine a 2" bulb producing a 6-9 foot stem with lots of blooms? No wonder the poor things are so small when they put so much energy in to the flower.

I hadn't noticed that BC had superbum listed http://buggycrazy.vstore.ca/product_info.php/pName/l-superbum-turkscap-lily/cName/lily-bulbs-species
Considering her price and size mentioned, I feel pretty good about the bulbs we got. :)
I seriously doubt if a superbum bulb could grow as big as a trumpet bulb or the other big bulbs that Lisa offers. It isn't even the same type of bulb. It is "stoloniferous", meaning it sends out an underground stem that grows another bulb, thus sucking energy from the original bulb. If it is anywhere as vigorous as my pardies, which are also stoloniferous, you will have a nice stand of them in no time. This is a completely different propagation strategy compared to what we are used to. For example, my Sheherazade just sits there year have year, never sending up another stalk and not much in the way of stem bulblets, though I have occasionally collected a few. But below ground the bulb grows bigger and bigger. On the other hand, sometime during the season the stoloniferous types send out an underground stolon and new bulb at the end, usually a few inches from the original.
I noticed Buggy Crazy had Superbum listed too, when I went over that site, ah ha, one last time. Thinking...."do I get that Henryi Turks Cap or not??" The Superbums, as bulbs, are noticeably different looking than trumpets, orientals & OTs. As you all are aware by now, I am no expert :0) I guess I paid the exhibition price and it seems fair $14.95. I have wanted to try that one for a few years, but the bulbs there have only been sold in 3-paks.
HI Magnolia - One of the reasons that I won't complain to B&D is because I do not know if my complaint is justified. Maybe this is the right size for their private harvest superbum that's been growing for 8 years. If I had someone tell me that what I got is not private harvest size thats been growing for 8 years then I would contact B&D. Right now I don't really know and don't want to be ignorant in my complaint. Also, I was happy with their other bulbs, and they did show good service by replacing 1 of my casa blancas that didn't grow last year with 2 huge replacement bulbs.
Oh my, as I'm reading Moby's posts I see that I did miss some of the posts here. Dizzy me :-)
Now that I'm looking at Buggycrazys 10.00 for 2" diameter I guess the size of what I got for 24.95 isn't so bad.
I just measured mine, they are 3" across and the smaller one that is connected is also 3" at it's widest spot, but the rest of the bulb is smaller. They sure are healthy looking regardless.
Pard - let me know if you hear anything from Lisa. Where will you see her?
Thanks buddies,
maureen
I didn't want to wait until next week so I emailed her. Note on her website that her superbums are 1", not 2". You get 2-1" bulbs connected together for $10. She says they grow better if the mother is left with the daughter and that is why they come in twosies (this info on her website). She didn't comment directly on the size but growers like her and B&D will price a cultivar accordingly with respect to size for that particular type of lily. For superbum 3" would be good sized and you received two of them, right?
I'll see Lisa next week when she delivers my order to me:-) I was good and ordered just a few lilies but also some natives and also swapping some seeds.
