Well, it is all Robert's fault really. He has been posting the most awesome plumie rings that I've ever seen in my life. I'm going to be re-visiting those pictures of his this winter when I am in plumie flower deficit and feeling blue. The ones with the Michelia x alba and Ylang Ylang blooms are really cool too. Anyway, I broke down and bought two plumie rings after I saw them for sale by a member of FPS. Aren't these really cool? By the way, there is still a black one and a white one left for sale. Anyone who is interested in one of these should contact Don Herron at donplumerianut2001@yahoo.com directly. He's in Florida if any of you members are nearby him. Here is one that I bought:
New Plumie Rings
Clare
I know I'm new at DG but I have to ask what is a plumie ring? And if you don't mind what do you do with that?
Jeri
Hi Jeri! I think the actual name is called "Pansy Ring," but it is adapted because we keep plumie blossoms in them. There is a groove in the ring that is filled with water, and the blossoms sit in the water, but the petals don't get soaked. Here's an example of one:
Edited to add: the plumie ring was made by my friend and fellow Pals member Kathy.

For more rings, check out Robert's thread entitled "South Florida Blooms."
Clare
That is neat!!! I didn't have a clue.
Jeri
Me neither Clare, that is wonderful. Thanks for the education once again!
I've seen these olive trays at the dept. stores and often wondered if they would work for plumie displays. Only drawback would be the straight line design, vs. the whimsical curvylinear shapes of the ones posted above. The one in this pic is pricey but I've seen them at Ross, Marshalls, etcl for much less.

I love the one w/ coral vine and C Ebert and also the pic on Dan's
Me too, Nery. I'm going to stick a candle in the middle of mine and make it a center piece the next time I have company. I tried that one year for Thanksgiving, but I didn't have a ring so I just placed the flowers around the candle on the holder without any water. Other vases that work well are caviar and mini condiment jars.
Oh, to have enough blooms to fill a ring..........
You will some day; I am sure of it!
Ardesia... you voiced exactly what I was thinking... and followed myself up with Clares comment. I can't wait to have enough. How long do they usually last in the ring and do they usually keep their scent after removing from the plant?
Tammie
Hi Tammie, you will too. Different cultivars have different keeping quality and are often rated on this quality. They vary from excellent to poor. This link describes 40 or so cultivars and includes info. about the keeping quality of those cultivars: http://www.ctahr.hawaii.edu/oc/freepubs/pdf/OF-31.pdf I haven't done a lot of picking flowers to bring them in so my experience with keeping quality is limited. From memory, Nebel's Rainbow, Samoan Fluff, and Celadine all have good keeping quality. Yes, the scent remains until the flower fades.
Here is another one of Paula's:
Wow, thank you Clare for that link. It is wonderful and very informative for a beginner like me. I have saved it for future reference.
Tammie
My pleasure:-) I refer to it often as well.
How gorgeous! Just wish I had blooms to put in them. Would the ring also work for Gardenias?
Clare
I seems like every time I write you it is to say Thanks but again Thank you for the link. I printed it. I've really come to depend on your post. I went to your home page and I can imagine how many people would want to d-mail you but Thank you for helping us and I respect that you don't want d-mails.
Jeri
I had no idea what the blooms were placed it for those beautiful pics, Clare...thank you! So pretty!!
Bocaginger, sure, I don't see why not. I didn't even think of gardenias, but that is a great suggestion because I like to bring gardenias inside when they open. I have Michelia trees, and it is perfect for those flowers too. It would work for any flower really that doesn't have a long stem, I think.
Jeri, you or any of the regular posters here can dmail me anytime. I do get a lot of dmails from nonsubscribers mostly, and I don't answer those anymore. I did answer them for a while, and it ended up being a full time job with no pay! LOL! Now I figure those nonsubscribers can subscribe to get their questions answered if they wish. Another reason that I try to discourage growing questions by email is that usually others have the same question or will have the same question so it helps everyone to read the answer, and then I don't have to re-type it more than once! I know that I must sound terribly terse in that message, but it really has helped to cut down on the amount of dmails coming in. I usually only have an hour or two a day on the computer -- sometimes, I only have a few minutes -- and I visit four forums and have three email accounts so I get stressed out if too many people send me emails. I think, if I were retired, I would feel differently, but I have another 15 years in the work force before that happens. Anyway, you are more than welcome for my help, and you don't have to keep thanking me, but I appreciate your thoughtfulness. I really do enjoy passing on what I learned and am happy to help others, and everyone here at Dave's is extraordinarily nice.
By the way, in case you want to read my two articles that I wrote, they are published at http://www.plumerias.com Look for Clare's Garden at the bottom left under PlumeriaPals. The pdf versions have more pictures than the web versions, and you can download the pdf version to your hard drive to save for future reference if you wish.
Love, love his pics, Clare!!! I was drooling over a few he'd posted in another thread...simply amazing!!
Me too, Chantell!
Hey this is one thing i will gladly take the blame for. :)
Nice rings Clare love the shape of those for sure..
You are correct Clare they are called Pansy Rings even tho i did a typo in another forum and called them posy rings in my title..
Most forums wont let you edit the title..
Robert, posy rings works just fine too, my friend. I've heard them called that. We're not too picky here. Hugs...
OOOOOOOOOO NOOOOOOOOOO!!!
Someone tell me I didn't just see this..... No wonder PudgieMudPies went so crazy over Plumies this summer.... Oh no.. You mean my brugs are gonna have to make room for plumies now???? I should be clicking on CLOSE PROGRAM right now.. I know.. I'll just send the link to her!! I'll pretend I've never seen it.. LOL
I feel another addiction coming on..
Feeling your pain...believe me!!!
I love the idea, the rings are gorgeous... and Clare, your first official ring is beautiful...
Brittany
Look at you Clare!!! Wonderful job...simply beautiful!!!
Going to keep it short tonight i just got off work and i am beat..
Just wanted to say very nice Clare your ring looks wonderful my friend..
Please if you can let us know the decay factor if possible...
What i mean is log which ones keep their quality the longest since you got so many different varieties together..
You should know that with so many different plumies together the water will get thicker due to the fact
the flowers are releasing their sugars..
The water will get yellow to brownish and will have a paste like substance to it..
Thanks so much, Brittany, Chantell, and Robert.
Robert, you work too hard, dear. Thanks for the compliment and the info. about the water. I will see if I can change the water regularly, and I will take continuous pics so we can all see the keeping quality if these cultivars.
