Sunday morning I was awakened by my 2lb Yorkie, Cujo (2 years old), screaming as if he had been hurt. He was under the covers which is where he sleeps everynight. I found him totally lifeless and he had urinated on himself. His eyes were still responding but he could not move. My DH was out of town and I had to call him and tell him that I thought Cujo was dying. I was trying to think what I needed to do fast to get him to respond, so I went downstairs and opened my refrigerator and opened a can of Mountain Dew. I got a new syringe (I use to handfeed birds) and forced some Mountain Dew down his throat. The reason I did this was I thought that maybe he was hypoglycemic and this would put sugar into his system fast. He still was not moving so I got in my car and drove him to the emergency vet clinic. The vet was not there and I had to deal with two tec's who did not seem to be interested in what was wrong with the dog and was more concerned with how I was going to pay for the visit. They would not touch him until I signed papers saying I would pay upfront for whatever needed to be done. The vet tec then took Cujo out of my arms and brought him over to a floor scale to weigh him. She was putting him down and I was telling her he could not stand up, that when I tried to get him to stand up he fell over. As I was telling her this, Cujo stood up and walked back to me. My mouth dropped wide open. I could not believe he was moving. She told me that it might have been a seizure and that he was comming out of it, which enabled him to walk. She asked if I wanted to leave him and they would run blood test and put him on medications. She kept trying to tell me what the cost would be and I looked at her and said that the cost was not a problem but I was going to watch him myself and contact my own vet within the hour. When I got home I called my vet (my husbands' cousin) and explained everything to him. He said it would be better to just watch him to see if he had any more seizures before running any test and putting him on life long medicines. He said he might have more that day or he might not have any more for months or never. Well, it is 3 days later and there have been no more signs of any seizures. I have never had a pet with seizures and do not know what to do when they happen. If anyone has had any experience with their pets having seizures and could offer any suggestions, please advise me as to what I need to do next time. Oh, the vet said the Mountain Dew was a good decision, not knowing what the problem was and it might have helped him come out of his seizure. Sorry about the length of this post.
