Japanese maple

Youngstown, OH

Hi, was wondering what japanese maple holds it red color the best in the summer without fading or burning? I have Fireglow but it fades out to a bleachie color and it doesn't look like a red maple. Any ideas would help? Thanks

Emporer I or Bloodgood would be my suggestions, but I am still relatively new to maples (2-3 years now). Also there are some Beeches with finer leaves that might hold their color well and be a decent substitute for a Japanese maple.

There is a Japanese Maple named A. p. 'Red Dragon' that would fit your bill exactly!! I saw it on a gardening show, Gardeners Diary, a show where they profile one gardener and his/her garden each episode. The man in a recent episode was asked the same question. He had a specimen of this tree, gorgeous glowing red new spring growth, and no leaf scorch in full sun in Georgias hot summers, holds its red all season, and the Fall color was literally an amazing, awesome sight! I have one on hold at a nursery here in my area, and can not wait to get it planted and watch it grow!!

Let us know what you go with....
