Another Rosemond Seedling ......

Brigham City, UT(Zone 5b)

Judy, you are a doll, I have some cuttings coming and am so excited. I have found out here on DG that I shouldn't be shy about asking for cuttings or seeds. If I don't, I just miss out. Hopefully I will have some cuttings to share with others in the next couple of years.

Mostly I just wanted to tell you how beautiful this brug is. You do a wonderful job with them,

Marie

Pocahontas, TN(Zone 7b)

Marie,

Suggestion, open a thread saying you would like to receive cuttings or seeds for postage. I'm sure there are people who wouldn't mind sharing some cuttings but do not want to post that they have cuttings available.

Best of luck,

Judy

OHH... Boy Oh boy
How exciting Judy....
Great photo sequence of the development in color.
I'm sure happy you didn't go out and get any bugs up your skirt....LOL

Carmel, NY(Zone 6b)

DON'T GO THERE!!!

Pocahontas, TN(Zone 7b)

Kin,

I would go out on the porch where I could see the bloom and if there was a change in color, I would wake poor Bob up to go take pictures. He has to truly love me to put up with me. I'm so allergic to any kind of sting or bite so he didn't want me being in the yard at night and not being able to see.

Judy

What a wonderful Man Judy!
It must be so nice sharing the same interests in the Garden.
You just stay out of that garden of yours at night. We don't want to hear a story of you going
Bump
In the night!!!
Thanks again Bob and Judy for the great photos.

Judy, a man like that is worth his weight in gold! Lovely pictures!

I'm actually afraid of those dang Humingbird Hawk Moths also!!! They are still here and have pollinated almost every bloom. I have seed pods hanging everywhere but they don't have time to develop before I have to trim them up for the winter.

Judy

Pocahontas, TN(Zone 7b)

He was laughing, saying if we only had another camera a picture of me in my gowntail, trying to watch where I was going, dodging the moths and trying not to let the cats trip me while trying to take a picture, would be worthy of posting. The last time I went out by myself at night Mr Cat almost gave me a heart attack by jumping for the shoulder strap of the camera and in the process brushing against my fingers. I thought something big had gotten me.

Say Good Night Gracie....

Oh Judy... Not only is this thread so exciting for seeing the progress of your bloom... but getting a visual on you out at night is just tooooooo funny!
I almost knocked myself silly when a moth fluttered too close to my ear when I was smelling a bloom... I slapped the livin (%$* out of me! My son laughed so hard I bet he woke the neighbor lady. LOL

Braselton, GA(Zone 7b)

That is too funny ZZ...I have a quick question...how deep should the water be in the aquarium I am using to root brugs? Just want to be sure it isn't too deep..thanks!

Pocahontas, TN(Zone 7b)

A couple of inches up on the cutting, depending on what you are using to keep the stem off the bottom of the bubbler, should be fine for keep an eye on because it will evaporate readily. Toothpicks are good for this, pebbles will work and the combination is even better. I've used netting on the bottom and that works well for me, but you have to cut it off the roots if you leave them in the bubbler for a long time.

Judy

Braselton, GA(Zone 7b)

Thanks! My problem was trying to get the water deep enough in the aquarium for the pump to work and not have too much of the stems covered, I think I just need more rocks...so I will grab a bag today..

Pocahontas, TN(Zone 7b)

Take a picture please. If you have the high air tubes for a filtering system you will probably have to do away with them and attach the pump via tubing to an air stone or long blue strip air outlet that you can find at Wal-Mart. Or just use the air pump in another container. This cheapy set up rooted all sorts of things (phils, begonias, brugs) for me last winter, any cutting that will root in water will benefit from being in a bubbler.

About those moths. We never had thrips until hurricane Rita. We never had moths until Lowes. One day we went into the plant area and there were wall to wall, ceiling to floor moths. I HAD to buy the last purple encore azelia and we thought we got all the moths off it, but my word, I now have the identical moths here. Are they young hummingbird moths, which I thought were very large. These moths are medium sized. Judy did you use that metalic ribbon for your cuttings?? Looks like a good idea. I bubble in acquairams these days, just because I have several. I hope I don't have to set up one soon, I always wait until the midnight hour...

Pocahontas, TN(Zone 7b)

Sherry you wrote: Judy did you use that metalic ribbon for your cuttings??

No tell us about that

Re: The Hummingbird Hawk Moths are BIG go to this thread for more about them. http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/659135/

LOL! Judy, it looked like metalic ribbon in your bubbler bin...metalic ribbon - if not, what was that??

Pocahontas, TN(Zone 7b)

It's a nylon netting which kept the cuttings in place and off the bottom of the container. I hate to ask DH to do something for me if I can work around it. I have a slightly deformed right hand, therefore couldn't push the toothpicks into the stems of the brugs so I opted for doing it that way. The root grew through the netting so I just cut the netting off with scissors.... but I left some brugs cuttings in the bubbler for forever. I won't make that mistake again because they didn't bloom for me this year.

Judy

Oops let me make a point... under normal circumstances they probably would have bloomed, but this was a very bad year for brugs at our house, extreme temps and drought, which brought on an infestation of mites, because the brugs were stressed. I was doing good just to keep them alive.

IMO, Judy, the toothpicks are not a necessity. There was a time I thought they were. Then, I learned, in my bubbler, that mainly, the bubbler stir/movemet and warmth during the winter was about all they need. Some times, some winters (I've had three brug winters), an occasional change of water might be helpful. Here is the deal, if they look slimy, rinse them off, add clean water, and plop them back in. ST and H202 might be helpful, small amounts are suitable. One time, I had a bubbler batch that drained dry and was GREEN slime. I rinsed them and added clean water, H202/ST, and let them sit, then put them in the ground and the all lived/thrived and produced beautiful brugs. The main(est) thing, in our zones, is to stay with the brugs, water them one, two, three times and enjou them in the fall. Spring, if you manage a good, ready to go bubbler crop, but fall if you put them out late..that is how it goes here in southeast Arky...

Pocahontas, TN(Zone 7b)

Sherry, what is the "ST" referenced in your last posting.

Thanks,

Judy

Union City, CA(Zone 9b)

ST = Supertrive
You can also use old screen [ from screen doors or scrap pieces ] just set in sun and rince . Don't use the metal type , just the nylon / plastic .

Pocahontas, TN(Zone 7b)

Thanks for the explanation and tip Tony!!!

Here is one of this morning's pictures. She is 16 inches from the bottom of the stem down and right at 7 inches across her skirt. This is the only bloom on the 8 foot tall plant. The angle of the camera isn't good but it almost captures her color. Most of the time she shows up as near red due to lighting. I took about 30 pictures trying to capture the correct color.

That is such a perfect picture Judy... I love it..

About the bubblers? I use some clay balls I got from the Hydroponics store.. they are great.. cause you can re-use them after you take your cuttings out. They come off the roots pretty easily. They also had some pots that were actually open weave baskets.. I made a quickie bubbler out of a Ziplock Container yesterday cause I made the mistake of taking a look on ebay and got some Golden Lady cuttings.. Yeah I need those like I need a hole in the head.

I really want more good seeds to grow.. I loved growing from seed. Getting a double feels like winning the lottery! I can't imagine how exciting it would be to get a bloom as pretty as yours. I'm just beside myself with joy for you Judy.

I want to go live in Judy's yard!

Pocahontas, TN(Zone 7b)

ZZsBabiez- In my humble opinion you have the perfect bubbler!!!! Does the store from which you purchased those have a website? Rural MS/TN doesn't have Hydroponics stores. lol lol

Sequee - they smell divine!!! The seedling fragrance is totally overwhelmed by Amber Rose with so many blooms on one side of her and then 3 new Jamica Yellow blooms open on the other.

There was a point when I was sick of seeing pictures of pink brugs and reading all the gushing about them, but when all my pink brugs blooming at once I forgave them for being pink. I am delighted with the color of this seedling, a muted rose.color Matter of fact it is the same shade the walls are painted in the bedroom downstairs and I mixed that paint myself.

LOL Me, too, sequee!! Judy, thanks for sharing the beautiful bloom.

Sharon

Pocahontas, TN(Zone 7b)

Sharon,

I'll have to admit some seedlings turned out deformed and some were tacky white ones but this one makes up for those. Now to get some more seeds. lol lol

I would advise all brug lovers to try their hand at growing seeds if they haven't already.

Judy

Carmel, NY(Zone 6b)

I do much better at seeds than I do at cuttings. But I NEVER give up!

SE Arky, United States(Zone 8a)

I totally skip the bubbler step where the brugs are made to stand up. I guess I don't understand the necessity of that step and the majority of my brugs came from cuttings that go through the bubber. In fact, I have some that are returning, having gone the full cycle. I had some cuttings last year that went to the bubbler with pods, and in the spring I planted them, then harvested their seed pods from the season before, they bloomed this year, and now have pods in the bubbler cutting I put in the ground last spring. I'm going to cut thoese exact limbs and take them back to the bubbler right before our first serious frost.

Pocahontas, TN(Zone 7b)

Sherry,

Woman you a full of information and I totally appreciate that you are sharing it with us. Tell me how big your seed pods were when you brought in the cuttings. I have a yard FULL of brugs with seed pods just starting. If I could harvest all of them, I could supply all of DG. lol lol

Judy

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

Thank you Judy.. I love this lil bubbler, but it is like 100 sizes too small. LOL

I don't think that store has a webisite.. It would probably cost a mint in postage for the clay balls. Although they are not very heavy when they are dry. You might be able to use Aquarium pebbles that are smooth.. although they wouldn't hold moisture like these do...

Now that I've experienced the different blooms, I have to agree with you about growing seedlings.. I have 2 doubles that haven't bloomed yet, and I'm goin nutz waiting! Maby I can cross my own for next year.. Oh how awesome would that be!!
I love this thread cause I can feel your joy over your beautiful pink... it's so pretty.

Carmel, NY(Zone 6b)

Maybe if you broke up a couple of clay pots you could get the same effect?

Toone, TN(Zone 7a)

Judy found a source for the clay balls and is off buying them right now. :-)

Carmel, NY(Zone 6b)

Uh-oh...

Toone, TN(Zone 7a)

lol Should be interesting to see what she comes home with!

I think I need a life. Here I sit, vicariously living thru Judy's shopping trips! Of course she is picking some up for me too. (Judy are your ears burning?)

In my defense however, I am working on 2 websites and a logo...and just bought a bunch of stuff online.

SE Arky, United States(Zone 8a)

Tanks, Judy! I do what comes naturally and is the easiest, and I find trying to keep them standing up straight all winter is impossible in my GH. If they are crooked when it's time to plant, I'd just straighten them up then, rather than separate pots with individual spaces. Oh, I went through a time where i thought I had to keep them separated in the bubbler, but I stopped that too. If I'm going to plant them right next door to each other, and some thisclose, why do I need them in separate water, right next door to each other in the GH. Off to get cat food...
