CLOSED: Cutworm Moth?

Brockton, MA(Zone 6a)

There are so many moths, my head is spinning.
Does anyone recognize this one? Resting on the house siding.
Thanks

Try this genus, or one near it: Iridopsis http://bugguide.net/node/view/11510

They warn that they're hard to ID, because there's so much variation in the coloring

Claypa, that's about as far as I could get. I checked again and came up with this http://bugguide.net/node/view/30154
What do you think?

The problem with that one is it's a west coast resident. There's another genus found in your area, protoboarmia..there was a picture of one of the Iridopsis on white vinyl siding, maybe a diagnostic characteristic? lol
That's a neat moth, with that little fringe on the wings. I bet it's an adaptation to fly silently, I'm going to look into that

I often overlook the regional aspect. To me all bugs are everywhere. lol

It can definitely be confusing...MySharona's sphinx moth on the other thread today is from Guadeloupe and Martinique, and some sites only mention those places, but they've made it to the U.S. according to bug guide... by the same token, maybe your moth IS from out west. Hard to say. I love something the late Roger Tory Petersen said about birds being found where they weren't supposed to be..."Birds have wings, and they use them." Who knows.
The only thing I'm finding about fringed wings for silent flight is about owls, but again, who knows? Not me...lol

'Howdy' guys ..

It looks mitey similar to one of several of the Dagger Moths .. but I'm certainly no whiz either!

You're right, Claypa .. they are quite difficult to ID correctly.

Try this site > http://mothphotographersgroup.msstate.edu/Files/Live/Living48.5F.shtml
(about middle-ways the page starts lookin' to be some similar fellers)

* I'm keepin' my spyballs 'peeled', while trying to ID some of my own ..

Or these... I still like the protoboarmia, all the way at the bottom

Magpye, that's an awesome site, organized by the Hodges numbers, too!

Don't let the Cimex lectularius bite!

Brockton, MA(Zone 6a)

I assume the Cimex are 'bedbugs' lol
