Fire Ants in Chemical-Free Vegetable Bed
I have been succesful using a soak of alfalfa tea directly into the mound........then I treat my entire beds to a good dusting of dried molasses. This got rid of several mounds in my organic butterfly gardens for the entire season
That sounds like an interesting idea too. I'm fighting a losing battle on a large mound right under my bird feeders. I definitely don't want to use any poisons or granules...so I'll try anything at this point!

Melanie ~ let us know how it works for you.
Okay, so I have been lurking around this discussion. I have ants in every one of my beds, but can't use the boiling water since that will kill the plants that they have chosen to build around. I assume that the same is true for the vinegar right? I hesitate to use chemicals because my dogs get in the beds and pick up bark, but something like vinegar would likely just taste bad (and maybe the additional benefit is that it would keep the dogs out of the beds, at least short term).
Yes, the vinegar will kill the plants. Found that out the hard way.
me, too, brigidily. Tried to give irises a dose of needed acid - BIG mistake - no more irises.

I'll see if I can find dried molasses and alfalfa tea, petit_...I wonder if you can go to a feed store for them?
Melanie
Melanie, nurseries that sell organic products usually have both.

Melanie:
Be sure to tell us after you serve your ants their alfalfa tea; if it gives them one lump, or two.
