San Antonio Plant Swap (The People)
Hello Everyone, we had a great time, it was so great to meet Melanie, GD, Lee and his wife, Calvin and his wife, Debbie, Sheila, and to see again Linda, and Nada, we met her just last week at the Dallas Swap.
Nada's house is very interesting in a lovely wooded setting that drops off about 20 feet in the back and goes all the way to a creek.
Her plants are really nice, and she is right, that Rosamary is humongous, she had lots of butterflies all over.
The area where she lives is really beautiful country, we enjoyed the trip there, although we got a little lost toward the end.
We drove back mostly through rain, but thank God we got home safely around 10.15 and then during the night the power went out, and we haven't been able to get on the computer till now.
It was all a very eventful day.
Josephine.
Linda, Sheila and Josephine getting aquanted and posing for the camera.
This is all the pics I got from Frank now. I know there were at least two other cameras shotting pics so there should be more pics coming... plus I finally found my camera this morning (would you know it was in the laptop bag) and if there is something you saw that you forgot to take a pic of, just let me know and I will try to get one for you.
Thanks again. I had a blast.
I was wondering if those palms were the Dwarf Palmetto, Sabal minor, which is found sometimes along rivers and in Palmetto State Park in Texas. But of course, they were barely leaves peeking out of the ground, so even with a photo an ID might not be for sure.
Nada was such a great hostess and Jennifer was really very helpful and sweet. Lovely place Nada has! And everybody there was so nice!
Who is that back, and center???? The lady with the short hair???? I swear..freaked me OUT..When I enlarged it for a gander..I thought I was lookin at MYSELF..wow..Gotta show my DH when he gets in from mowing the lawn..
(theme from Twilight Zone plays as signing out...) lol
lol....good lord...I look as tho I'm about 100 years old...my hair is so white and silver! lol.... Well, we just got back from the River Walk...had a great day....and so we're off to Big Bend country in the wee hours of the morning tomorrow. I can't wait! It will be hard not to stop and collect plants along the way...but as they say...enjoy them...and leave them for the next person. :) I'll try to find some cholla cactus wood tho, for more projects. So unless I find an internet cafe or a computer plug in the side of an ocotillo bush, I'll be typing to ya'll later in about 4 or 5 days.. :) I'll take some photos of interesting plants along the way... :) Lee, I really like those butterfly photos... thanks for sharing those. I take awful photos...lol :p Nada, I was showing off the size of my iguana...not a fish, lol. ;)
Melanie
Looks like you all had fun!

turbo.. don't let that keep you from joining in. I just love talking to people about plants and learning new things. I learned things about my own place and plants I have that "I" didn't know and I live here! *giggle
turbo....whether you've been on DG for 1 day or 5 years....its the love of gardening and friendships that bring these folks together. Thats really what it is all about. I don't get out a whole lot...just work and all....but I decided some months ago that I would love to meet and connect with the people that I've come to know here. I'm so glad that I did....and hope to again.............and probably again, lol... :) Wish you could have made it.. :)
Melanie
That's good to know..Until I joined this site..the only thing I knew about the word "beneficials" had to do with medications!..Comes from nursing for so long! I wonder if there is or has been a Swap down here around Corpus?
I had a great time at my first swap meet, and meeting everyone was fun. I hope there is a swap in Corpus...my oldest daughter is in her first year at A&M down there, but she keeps coming up here to visit, and I want to go down there!!! The campus is a gardeners' paradise!
Oh really? I have never been to the Kingville campus..Have the one in College Station...My Dad taught there for a while...I dont care WHAT folks say..AGGIES ROCK!
Dee & I use to live in Corpus - I sure miss that area - the Laguna
I've more pic's to post and will try tomorrow....we've had right at 14" of rain since yesterday morning...when we left for the Swap....I've been soaked to the skin 3 different times today....saving - tending to plants,...tryin' to keep drain areas clear....our pond increased from about 1 ft deep to about 8 ft deep since... midnight.....gurgle...drip,drip
but hey,.. Josephine/Frank,....the aquatic plants have plenty of water
now!
I'll admit....that I've been examining/admiring our newly acquired "babies" ....many thanks, again, to each of you...for a good outing....
and such interesting plants! Lee

I dont know what our total is..it was a lot, but certainly not that much..Stay safe!!
Willis is a good little town..We lived there for a few years..Guess we just traded places with yall!
Wish you'd've come to SA yesterday....you would've enjoyed it!!
It was our first time ,...as it was for a few others,....so you would've fit right in! There'll be other times!

If not any in the lot that I need..hope to turn for a dollar or two! Gotta have dollars so I can buy MORE GARDENIN stuff! LOL! Yall have a good night!!
Randa
Yeah you guys should have made the trip Turbo . . . but like Lee said, there's always next time :)
Dang Lee . . . if we would have know that @ 14" of rain . . . we could have sent you home with some lumber to build an ark :O Wow . . . that's lots of water in that short of time. Hope you guys are safe and get'n dried off a bit by now.
Thanks again everyone . . . it was a somewhat small (in terms of amount of people) 1st SA swap, but it was no where near small in the plant dept. Somehow I think everyone went home with more than they brought . . . hope we left enough for Nada ;)
Bright & sunny this mornin', Gary! We're dryin' out now.....whew!
Once the ground was saturated (sometime between 1 and 10" of rain)
the last 3-4" flowed across the top of our entire property....like a wide stream. During the storm Allison was the last time we saw it that bad.
As I was trying to save many of my plants....I set out an empty bucket,....in a little less than 15 mins...it collected 2" if rain.
Once again today,...the dial up connection is SOOO slow.....so I'll try uploading a few pics...and maybe some more later.
Left to right - Nada, Sheila, Josephine, Debbie & Gary and Melanie

Now all ya gotta watch out for is the mosqitos! They are already BAD again here..Mosquitos on Steroids..They eat me up..dont give DH a bit of trouble..Since yall are Texans..and all gardeners..Ck out the new thread and help me out!!! Thanks yall! Randa
That's good to hear Lee . . . glad the rains have let up for you guys. No hurry on the pics . . . I totally understand about the pokey dialup and how the weather can make it even worse.
Thanks for share'n what ya have so far :)
GD
PS. If it will make the load time any faster . . . you can crop me out of the pics :D lol

What a beautiful place you have there! .... all that shade ...A Hosta growers dream! :)
The food must have been good ... I have only seen one picture where Sheila did'nt have plate. LOL We must meet one day Sheila. Is Sheila a subscriber?
Anyway look like a good time was had by all.
Sylvia, you can't have too many friends named Sheila! LOL!! Just keep us straight, remember I am the old one. LOL!
I'm sure you would really like Sheila....she was so interesting!
She's very knowledgeable about herbs.....AND a warm humerous soul that easily made me smile....and the DW too!
We enjoyed our time with her! I don't think she's a subscriber yet....but I was talkin' to her about how much she's missing....and she seemed very interested...so we'll see!
Tell her she must subscribe to get the full benefits. ...plus I am into Herbs too.
Now Sheila ... Ms FtWorth ... did you see her picture? I doubt I would get the two of you mixed up. LOL
Hosta's would be lovely if they weren't candy to deer.
That doesn't help sometime when talking about the two Sylvia's we have, (Red Oak and you in big D)! LOL!
I noticed the food you guys in SA had passing around. I don't think many of the pictures didn't have food. LOL! Nata your place seemed like such a nice area to have the swap too.
Sheila in FW
I think so... *giggle but of course I live here!
I got back from Big Bend country today...and happy to report that all of my SA RU green babies are just fine...sitting out on my back porch, lol. Sad to report that half of my prairie flame sumac has died for some reason while I was away.. :( Lee's burr oak, Gary's live oak....and Josephine's pecan are goin' in the ground...along with the catalpa and green wysteria...and the plumeria....and....and all of the others...lol
I may have to get a pickaxe to even try to begin any holes! :)
Melanie
lol TxT . . . you should have brough back some *ready-made holes* from out west ;) lol
Glad ya'll made it back and all your young'unz are do'n fine. That wind you brought back with you nearly blew some of my little ones away. I had to bring the ones I didn't get in bigger pots yet inside night before last.
