How fast do lilacs grow?

Aurora, CO(Zone 5a)

About how much height do lilac bushes put on per year? I planted four lilacs this year. One stands as tall as my waist. The others were younger and are knee high or a little less. How many inches will they put on each year? And from what I understand, they have to be about 4 feet high before they bloom. Correct?

I have a 6 foot high privacy fence. I planted the lilacs to be a privacy fence higher than that since they just built several duplexes a couple feet beyond my back fence. Until they (the lilacs, not the duplexes) grow up, I might plant sunflowers there.

It depends on the type I would say. I have 3 types and they vary from 6" - 3' a year.

I have James McFarlane, Ellen Willmott, Adelaide Dunbar, and Krasavitsa Muscvy. Okay I'm not sure about the spelling of the last one. Next spring I'm going to get a replacement Syringa Vulgaris. The James McFarlane is the one up to my waist. The others are barely knee high.

Up here it depends upon how often the deer graze the terminal buds. ;>} Ken

I won't have that problem, thankfully. And I don't think the squirrels are interested in my lilacs.

Ken - you're taliking about reindeer right ;)

James McFarlane is the only one I know on that list and it always looks the tallest of the ones for sale so I would think 2-3' a year as a minimum.
