Bump!
Kim.....Thanks for the bump and to all of those who made up this thread. It is incredibly informative. I didn’t even realize the dates until I was half way down the page. Great read
^_^
I am thrilled to belatedly find all this information. Thanks---it is just in time for me to utilize this fall.

I had to use it a few weeks ago a storm broke a brug..so far so good!
I make my Standards from my Brugs as they grow cleaning off side branches and leves
Paul, I do the same - remove the branches and leaves from the git-go.
Great thread, so going to do it this year;) Thanks so much for the info..:)Anita
I still need a little more info. This thing about a Brug needing to develop the Y is new to me----but, explains a lot of things. If I take a cutting this fall from above the Y, will that new plant bloom next year without forming the Y? Is that an absolute rule that Brugs will not bloom until they are above the Y?
Thanks for the info Chrissy100------------and, I am old enough to still be dumbfounded that I am conversing with someone in Australia.

Thanks for the bump---this was great information and pictures too!
What a great thread!
I have a question...I have a huge Brug that is about 10 ft now, but it's getting too bushy, and I would like it to look more like an umbrella, as you say. If I hard prune it, will it affect the blooms? Do Brugs bloom on new wood or old wood?
Thanks!
I can't wait to have a brug tree! you have realy helped me.. I have had lots of luck this summer rooting anything with the little water fountain thing my son got me ( It looks like a smaill whiskey barrel with an old fashioned handle) small pump, it has rooted many things for me there I plan on bringing it inside to keep cuttings going this winter. I am so kacited for a TREE! :)
I love how you used your fountain for rooting!! : ) Beautiful pic too!
Okay, I am losing it, I forgot I ordered three Brugs this spring, I swear they were only sticks! I found the other two.. one on the north fence covered with morning glories and cardinal vine, and it has about five branches, ( well, it doesn't anymore , I cut them and potted two and put the others in the water fountain) and the third one is branched out everywhere in one of my patio barrels where I made an arbor arching over the corner with morning glories and sweet autumn, now the arbor is down and I have to worry about getting this one in as well. sheese! I can't even remember what colour they are! I have too many flowers! They all have flower buds, I hope I get to see one! Look to the left of the pic, this was taken in august aound the end of the month.. it is alot bigger now! ( I tore the Morning glory and other vines off of it and got the three branches on the neighbors side back to me.)
robcorreia, Brugs bloom on new wood so yes you will lose some of the blooms — blooms that would have come from the branches you remove, but over time, the trunk you leave will eventually produce tons of flowers. This is a photo of my mother's Dr. Seuss. She lives in Fremont, CA and get occasional freezes that nip at the top. Two years ago, this one froze all the way to the ground, but in San Diego, your's will probably get even bigger. You can root the branches you remove and make more trees.
joeswife, my DH bought a dolly and replaced the bottom plate with a longer piece of metal to make it easier to move larger pots. I also stick to using plastic or fiberglass pots. I used to have some half wine barrels, but they are impossible to move without killing your back. I don't water my plants for a few days before moving the pots.
Beautiful morning glory. Do yoy have any suckering problems with it. Your Brugs look like they haven't produced a "Y" yet. If you keek that tip alive throught the winter, you'll get blooms a lot sooner next year.
Thanks Bettdee, I didn't know anything about these until I came here.. I have about 20 different glories, and they just end up in the wrong places, every year I learn were not to put them LOL ...I am making cuttings now on the big ones, hope this works! My hubby will use the dolly to help me bring them in..
OMG Betty, look at the SIZE of that trunk! WOw! Is it true Dr Seuss is one of the most fragrant ones around?
I would certainly put it up near the top of the list. The plant was located along the back fence. When in full bloom, my sister, who lives with my mother, would have to shut her window to try to keep the fragrance out of her room. She said the odor made her sick.
Wow!
