brugmansia

Fort Mill, SC(Zone 7b)

What is involved in rooting a brugmansia? A neighbor has 3 or 4 colors and I'd love to get a cutting off of each if that's what it takes to root.

Lee's Summit, MO(Zone 6a)

Take some cuttings, put them in a glass of water (LABEL THEM!), put them on a window sill and change the water once a week. Then it's just a matter of time til they root. When the roots are about an inch long, pot them up and keep them warm and moist. They will get very large very fast, so in the ground planting is best, but a big pot will work, too. They love lots of sun, water and heat.

And fertilizer! They are greedy, greedy feeders.

Thank you for asking this question and thanks to the two replies. I was wondering the same thing. I'll come see you soon Digs, coming with gapeahen.

Missouri City, TX(Zone 9a)

I have planted the cuttings directly into potting soil and they did well- not sure maybe it was a fluke.

Cordele, GA(Zone 8a)

How long did it take to root in a pot? I was wondering about doing so both ways.

Missouri City, TX(Zone 9a)

Gosh, can't really remember, but it wasn't long at all.

Cordele, GA(Zone 8a)

I'll try it both ways. I read alot of good things for both methods. I just didn't know which is the quickest rooting method. I suppose it really doesn't matter though. I'm sure I won't get them rooted well enough to plant outside this fall. I guess I'll just keep them inside until spring.

From "New to the North"
Everything I read tells me that Brugs are tropical??? Do you bring them in like dahlia bulbs or glads? How do you winter them?

Gary,
If they are potted, some people strip the leaves, put them in basement or garage and let them go dormant. If they are really big, you could also take cuttings. Check out the brugmansia forum - there's a lot of discussion about this right now since everyone's weather is changing, and the brugs can't take the cold.

Cordeledawg,
Can't wait to meet you. Been trying to come up with a date for our meeting but October is a busy month for me. If you want some brug cuttings, I will save you some. Am cutting back now so let me know.

Gary, I prune back some of the ones that are not root hardy, and overwinter them in my basement but the rest are cut back to the ground and overwinter where they are planted. If I'm not sure about their hardiness, I take cuttings and overwinter them in the basement. Check out the brug forum for info about your zone. I know there are folks that grow them in zone 5 but I'm sure they keep the root ball in a protected place. They are worth the effort.

Digs, I'd love some. I've just got hooked on brugs and salvia, thanks to an enabler named Donna.
