Bulbs coming up too early...

Long Beach, CA(Zone 10a)

Is anyone else experiencing spring bulbs sprouting already, or am I in some bizarre microclimate???

I have Dutch Iris, Freesia, Daffodils, Tritonia, Watsonia, Crocosmia, and Scilla already coming up. Normally, this doesn't happen until January...or even February...

I'm wondering if they'll bloom too soon, if at all....or get trashed by the rains.....

I haven't done anything different at all...they're just way ahead of schedule....These all stay in the ground all year,so it's not like I forced them....

This has never happened before.

I think it depends on the water they get; if they go all summer with no rain they are going to stay dormant. Have you had some late summer rains that woke them up? I have had freesia bloom at times of the year other than Spring and it seems dependent on moisture.

I have Snowdrops starting to come up, and one of my Camellia's has started to flower as well. Very weird and I'm not sure why. We've two days of rain since May but the areas where these plants are, are under irrigation. The Camellia has already bloomed this year and I didn't think they repeated.

Ditto -- I noticed my freesias are throwing up some foliage whereas they usually don't start till February here! And my rhododendrons are forming buds again, and I'm SURE they don't usually repeat, since I was planning to rip them out to put some Encore rhodies.....ain't Nature grand?

Hi all,
My freesias are coming up also.. watsonia foliage is now about 1' high...these have been getting water all along. Maybe they know something about the coming weather that we don't know. Maybe they're like me and soooo glad to see fall and some rain that they're just really happy and want to start growing!

My crocosmia bloom in about August. I wonder what is happening down there. I did notice dutch iris foliage though. Perhaps that's what you are talking about.

My sasanqua camellias are beginning to bloom too and they don't usually bloom until about December so not terribly early. Of course the other camellias bloom later. My watsonia foliage usually starts this time of year though. Not too unusual for it.

I have all kinds of bulbs coming up too. I covered them with a thick layer of microbark until the days get warmer, then I'll take the blanket off.
They should be ok covered up.

By next week, the first freesias should be opening...they're also WAY taller than they normally are...everything else just sort of "stopped"...but didn't die....maybe they'll just bloom when they're supposed to...???

The first sweet peas bloomed on Monday...normally they have frozen by now...(like last year)
Watsonias are about 5 ft. already, but no spikes...which is fine...I can wait...
Dutch iris are full of foliage and at normal height...but no flrs yet...
Daffodils just now reaching about 6" tall

Hydrangeas already leafing out...very bizarre....
Roses pruned the day after Christmas now leafing out also...that's almost unheard of ...
Reblooming dwf. bearded iris have buds on them....

It's almost like nothing is predictable this year...such odd weather...yet we HAVE had frost...my impatiens and begonias turned to black mush....it is all so non typical for this area and this time of the year...

I've spent the last week trying to get my frost-sensitive plants covered and sprayed with Cloud Cover so that I lose as few as possible. It'll be in the 20s so I'm betting on losing some ferns at least. I have a big orange tree that can't be covered but I've covered the smaller ones. I just have to wait and see what I have left on Monday. The big Orange tree though has been through a big frost. Ran my sprinklers tonight too. Hope that it all helps. Luckily though my bulbs aren't up yet!
