Just to see if it would work, I started a few scales in soil. Now that I have some leaves do I repot them or leave them along and give them some 1/2 fertilizer? I don't know if they are oriental or ??? Just went into the yard and found a bulb that some animal dugged up.
Thanks
Now, What do I do?
Wow, that is pretty cool. I'm sorry I don't know what you should do (too new to lilys) but just wanted to say how interesting it is that leaves grew out of the scales, that always amazes me.

Didn't I just see a post about where someone (maybe the Cockers of Minnesota) just plant the entire pot of seedlings like you have outside in the ground and let nature take care of them then?
From Leftwood:
In fact that is what Ruth and Hugh Cocker do too: when they have a pot of Asiatic seedlings ready to go into the garden, they plant the whole pot (without the actual pot, of course). Hugh says the little seedlings are too fragile and you'll get better survival without any drastic disturbance of the roots. Disturbance that would have to happen if you tried to pull the seedlings apart. Interesting, by the end of the season, the tiny bulbs have pulled themselves apart. The initial spears that come up the following spring will be much farther apart than the original pot.

Those folks know what they are doing.. ;)

I just pop my clumps into the garden as described. You could do more damage by trying to separate them if their roots are all tangled. Then next fall separate them out.
I checked the container. The soil won't stay together if I take them out. Should I wait until there is a better root growth? Should I also start feeding them. I started these scales on 8-25-06.
Thanks
Give the pot a good soak, then tip it upsidedown in your hand. Then it should be possible to plant in one clump.
As long as they are green and growing, I fertilize with half strength miracle grow once a month. or so.

I also have some Lilium Regale seedlings coming out. Should I plant them out for the winter or wait until spring?
I usually let my seedlings grow on till they die down naturally. Then I put then in their pot in a baggie (to prevent drying out so fast) inthe fridge for 10 weeks or so. Then bring the pot back out into the warmth to start growing again.
inanda- who hasn't a clue about growing lilies in hot zones.
You mean grow them indoors under lights?
another question: should lilium regale seedlings be treated as trumpets or as other types?
There are only 2 kinds of lilium seed germination.
Immediate germination or delayed germination. Regale is immediate germination. I would treat the bulbs like other trumpets. Yes, I grow mine under lights till they die down naturally.
Very often my seeds do not grow any green top growth right away, so after the baby bulbs are large enough, I put them in the fridge for their vernalization for 10 weeks or so.

Thanks Inanda
That answers all my questions...for now :)
you're always very helpful...hats off to you.
Question:
What happens if you don't know if the seeds are of the quick germinating kind of the other kind?
I have some seedpods I collected from a mixture of orientals and trumpets and orionpets...I am so new to this that I don't even know which ones can be considered true trumpet types. Now I am not quite sure how to sow them. The baggies sound great for slow germinating seeds but what if there are some quick germinating types mixed in as well?
On the other hand if I surface sow some of these mixes and some germinate, I wouldn't be able to know that the rest didn't.
Any way to tell get around this problem? Or should I just start being more studious in my seed collection? (I plan to be more careful anyway but I would really hate to lose the seeds I have this year...all the possible beautiful hybrids that they might result in!)

Well, since no one is jumping in here, I can tell you that orientals have delayed germination, and trumpets have immediate.
What a mixed up kid has, that I don't know. Is there dominance involved? So would it matter if a seed is 3/4 oriental and 1/4 trumpet, or vice versa? Inquiries we'd all like answered, I'm sure.
If orienpet seeds don't germinate in a month or so, I stick'em in the fridge for a while.
The seeds I got from NALS that were hybrids were noted to have a range of germination times from immediate to delayed...
Do you still have the catalog #. I'll look them up....
86-145 and 86-122 both were listed as IE>>DH which I took to mean that there was a range of germination modalities...we shall see!
The green ones really sound interesting. I can't wait until the next NALS list comes out.
Hey I planted some scales in some small zip lock bags and put a book on top. Since they are Asiatic will they try to grow foliage without fridge time? They wouldn't be to happy trying to grow through a text book :*)
Where can I find the NALS catalogue?
The NALS seed list will be available online around the first of April to nonmembers. Donors and members will get first pick earlier but there will still be a huge number of choices left due to the very generous donors. I will keep people posted when the time comes.
Thanks for the info pardalinum
how can someone like myself become a member?
Here is the link to the NALS membership page.

Thanks Padalinum
Just an update, I finally found grow lights...:)
