I'm Seeking the Cultivar Name

New Orleans, LA

USDA here is 9a/9b. D.G.'s "Identification" forum ID'd this as a rosa-sinensis, but suggested the "Hibiscus" forum for cultivar name.

This plant is on the premises of my condo complex. Evergreen. About 3' in height. Flowers: single; up to at least 5" wide; 6-petaled; this year it bloomed beginning early June and again in late July; no blooms since sometime in August. Leaves: up to at least 4" x 4 1/4",; slightly thick; alternate; orbicular.

There are 3 other Hibiscus plants on the same premises - one with red single flowers and two with orange/yellowish double flowers. D.G.'s Identification forum ID'd them as rosa-sinensis. Whereas their leaves tend to be lance-like, the one featured in this thread has rounded leaves. Whereas this thread's Hibiscus is not blooming now, the other 3 are.

The 4 photos that follow were shot June 5 and 6, 2006.

Any comments would be greatly appreciated. Thanks a lot.

I'm very grateful carlo05 for your very quick and decisive response. I looked on the internet for 'Joan '. So far the best that I could come up with is " www.tinkersgardens.com/flowers", where the flower images appear to be a perfect match with mine. Disappointingly, however, there weren't any good leaf images. Thank you so much.

pinetreesa, here's a pic - I'm not the owner - with a bloom and some leaves.

If you want to get modern hybrids hibiscus you can visit Dupont Nursery there in Louisiana. http://www.dupontnursery.com/ProductCategory.aspx?cid=1&pcid=6

thanks a lot carlo05, for the pic. Its flower and leaves convincingly match mine. You have been awesomely helpful. Is 'Joan' a cultivar of the rosa-sinensis species? Or is it a hybrid of two rosa-sinensis cultivars ? Or what ?

Is its correct name Hibiscus rosa-sinensis 'Joan; or Hibiscus rosa-sinensis x 'Joan'; or what ?

Leon

Leon, for the first question the answer would be "both". In the tropical hibiscus world, a cultivar variety (cv) is an hybrid of two cultivars although there are exceptions (self-pollination and sports). In this case, hibiscus rosa-sinensis "Joan" was hybridized by LSUAES (if I'm not wrong, it stays for the Lousiana State University AgCenter Extension Service) from a LSU-2-C x Crown of Bohemia cross, being the former the pod parent (LSU-2-C) and the latter the pollen parent, Crown of Bohemia, a well known variety.

First carlo05, a belated thank you for the hyperlink of the your previous message. Second, I have to say that I am so impressed with your knowledge.

The way I understand it:

1) 'Joan''s scientific name is;
Hibiscus rosa-sinensis 'Joan'

2) 'Joan' is derived from:

'LSU-2-C' ( pod parent) x 'Crown of Bohemia' (pollen parent) .

I hope you can confirm the above. Thanks for the time you have spent on this ID and for the wonderful information.

Yes, that's it.

Thanks Carlos for your Oct 15 message.

I'll always be grateful for your interest, explanations, time.and trouble, which have been a great help in my project. I'm making a photo-catalog of the 3-dozen or so plant life types that grow in my condo complex. I will besubmitting to the Hibiscus forum pictures and descriptions of 3 more rosa-sinensis plants to try to get their cultivar/variety names.

I'm closing this thread. The ID, I was seeking has been solved - Hibiscus rosa-sinensis 'Joan'.

Many thanks to carlo05 and to Dave's Garden.
