Decumbent Cincinnati, OH(Zone 6b) Oct 14, 2006

Went to Mt. Airy Arboretum and Spring Grove Arboretum today and took some pictures. Leaves are changing fast. I even sampled a few persimmons that were quite sweet.

First up: Cotinus obovatus, American Smoketree.

Some snakebark maple. Looks to me like Acer pennsylvanicum.

It's easy to think of maples for fall color and forget that many have colorful fruits, as well, such as these palmatum fruits.

Acer pennsylvanicum is true to its name as it was everywhere in northern PA. Leaves the size of your head.

Bill,

Is your child so hideous that you make him carry a large leaf around so as to hide his face? How awful. How absolutely awful. However, I'm glad you chose the leaf of one of my favorite trees, Acer pensylvanicum, with which to do the dirty deed.

BTW, you will survive having ugly kids. I should know. Both mine started out ugly, and have only gotten uglier. At first it was an issue, but now that they are out of the house I don't think about it that much.
