This Sunny Florida morning of 68 degree's no Humdity was breath taking ~
O/T Captureing Florida's Morning Sunrise Beauty
ooooh aaaah ....how dreamy!
Gorgeous!!!
Unfortunately, we had an unexpected early frost here, so this morning's sunrise found me out back, one hose in each hand (until DH came out to help some), frantically hosing the frost off the banana trees and trying to thaw them out before the sun hit them. I don't think I'll know how successful I was until later this afternoon... hopefully any damage will be only to the leaves (which I was mostly planning to remove for overwintering anyway).
oh wow Jill. What do you do with them in the Winter ?
The mornings have been great 60's and low 80's and Humdity is down.
Hahahahahahaha. Jim (DH) has been asking that for a month. "Just what do you plan to do with those bananas this winter???" I grew them from little pups that I got last fall, so last winter they didn't take up much space.... now they are 6 to 12 feet tall! I potted up the smallest one last night and will hope it doesn't grow too tall to keep in the dining room. I will try to dig the others today, maybe get a neighbor to help if DH isn't able to get home this afternoon, and I plan to overwinter them in a semi-dormant state in the basement, near a pretty big south window. A couple of the bananas actually have pups, so depending on what the roots look like when I dig them up I may try to separate a couple of pups and pot them up so I can bring them upstairs and let them just keep growing over the winter. We will see how all of this works out.... of course, if the plants froze despite my dawn efforts, it's a moot point!
Oh my goodness lots of work you must love bananas !
I am soooo hoping my efforts will result in fruit next summer, but I know that might be a stretch. I ate Apple Bananas in Hawaii a few years ago, and they were delicious beyond words! I've also got an 'Ice Cream' Banana, and one that was supposed to be a Dwarf Orinocco but is now an unknown (at over 12 feet tall, largest one in the bed, it is no dwarf!).
Well, even if they do not fruit, I loved the look of them planted against the deck! I planted a couple of burgundy-leafed Castor Bean plants between them to add to the tropical look, and all of my Amaryllis plants went into that bed also (have to lift them this afternoon as well). There are a couple of struggling bloomless brugs and dahlias in that bed, plus a couple of canna lilies, and then I planted hot pink and bright purple petunias to fill in -- they took over!
I've got a picture but apparantly haven't downloaded it yet. I'll post it when I get the camera unpacked, LOL!
Freezing temps here this morning : ( Thanks for giving me a warm sunny day with your wonderful pictures Allison.Make me want to pack up and move south for sure : ) Nancy
Nancy I just said to my husband looking at this picture from this morning taken on our deck how could people not want to more to Flrodia :))
Sounds yummy Jill looking at pictures of them !
Beautiful pictures Allison!!!!!
I lived in DeLand(FL) for 34 years and although I like Arkansas alot ..I miss "home".Florida will always have a place in my heart. My son lives in Ormond Beach and I have alot of friends in Florida so I still have roots there and I do go back to visit often. I will always remember the beautiful sunsets we have there...and your sunset sure brought back memories of home ;0) Hubby is orginally from NJ and he just couldnt tolerate the heat and humidity there...I thrive on it tho! But with his heart condition we moved to Arkansas. I enjoy the seasons here ,especially in the fall with the colored leaves but come winter, if it gets too cold here I'm headin south! Hubby wanted to move to Pennsylvania but I couldnt take the weather there so Arkansas was our "compromise" state..LOL. I love the mountains and our 40 acres on top of a mountain but I think I will always miss Florida. Thanks for sharing !!! The pictures are stunning but there is nothing like being there to actually see. Thats when you can feel the real beauty Florida has to offer!
VG Thanks. Florida Sunrises and Sunsets are fabulous ! And the tmeperture in the 60's sometimes 550's in these fall mornings just go right along with the moods. The past few days have been low 60's high 83 today no AC needed nice breeze and humidty low ! To night will be high 50 's :)) Morning coffee and Cinnamon Rolls right out of the oven out on our lani/screen porch will be heavenly ! I love Florida's Winters !
I was born in NJ and grew up in RI, Ma, Maine ...and I love FLorida and hubby from MI neighter of us could go back up North to the cold.
My husband has health problems and has heart condition but he is Ok in Florida. Everyone is different. I have ALS but mostly bed/bound and if it is too hot I just don't go out . When the Winter comes and people start putting up their Holiday lights I get this wonderous feeling of joy and energy and so happy to be here another year ! People in our neighborhood light up/decorate big, we put up over 15 thousand lights and decor. ( hope we can this year hubby has not been able to move good for 3 weeks his back and he's trying to fix home next door we bought ).
The weather has been heavenly !
