New Bat Flower- Tacca thread

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

Oh.. time lapsed photography, way cool! I really appreciate everyone sharing their tacca-experience. Maybe IF we get a nice day I'll take mine home and put it in the bathroom, it's pretty bright (long narrow south window) but not much room, so maybe we'll develope a "closer" relationship and it will like me and reward me by staying alive. Next spring it can enjoy all our KS humidity. -B

it soonds better than it looks, its hard to do because the flower keeps moving around.

Oh man that's so beautiful! You are keeping it in high humidity now?

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

Oh Vizz, that is SO beautifully weird. I just love em!

(Taylor) Plano, TX(Zone 8a)

Congratulations!

Looks like you have the white wiskered one. I read somewhere that those are even less common than the black wiskered white taccas...Ü

Oh my gosh, really? Seedpicker, are you trying to start somethin? LOL You're the one who enabled us to purchase back on the other thread, right??? :) The ones posted on this thread have white... I checked back on Giancarlos's tacca thread, his had white and black..... I thought maybe it was an age thing.... I will be happy with a bloom, white whiskers or black (actually I'll be happy to keep it alive this winter). Very interesting.

(Taylor) Plano, TX(Zone 8a)

When all those links got posted to tacca sites and for tacca information. I read them ALL!...twice!

Then, googled it some more, lol...

I also talked with a grower, and asked their input...

One of those sites said that the white bats usually have black wiskers, and that white wiskers are more rare. It said it can vary, since many are grown from seed.

I don't know if the NSE taccas were grown from seed, or were divisions..Anyone know? Anyone ask them?

Hey seed who did you "speak" with?

(Taylor) Plano, TX(Zone 8a)

A grower in Florida. I don't know her name. It was information I had asked my friend (who bought some wholesale through her company) to ask her(the grower/wholesaler). It was pretty much all the same information on those sites...

Oh, ok. I put mine out in the SR and now the one leaf (I finally cut the flower stalk and yellow leaves off) is turning yellow and has a brown spot on the edge. :(

(Taylor) Plano, TX(Zone 8a)

You've recently moved it, and repotted it, so it is just probably just in a little shock right now...

I hope it hangs in there for you

Chesapeake, VA(Zone 7b)

I do to. I get disgusted when I walk by it.

(Taylor) Plano, TX(Zone 8a)

(((((hugs)))))

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

They do go dormant, right T? Maybe after it blooms?

Tacoma, WA(Zone 8a)

I have had it in a room at about 70 degrees with high humidity. It seems to be doing well I've lost one leaf. I read all the info, thats when I moved it to the humidity room, and stopped spraying it. It responded well.

And yes it was seedpicker that started all this... LOL 'wink' thanks.

Oh, Viv, look at your shelves set-up, cool. I think leaf loss is just a sign of growth... unless it is more than one or two at a time.... with no new growth appearing. (at least in a lot of plants' behavior).

(Taylor) Plano, TX(Zone 8a)

AuntB-Yes, they are supposed to go dormant, but can't seem to find any information detailing exactly what that is...

down to the ground?...just slow down?...guess I/we will just have to watch and see...

I don't think they go to the ground.. maybe but then wouldn't it seem that they wouldn't in a protected environment like your house, your bathroom a greenhouse?

Key West, FL(Zone 11)

Mine finally opened all the way today, not as cool as the white ones but a great starter plant.

He, cool is in the eye of the beholder! LOL. I think it's pretty cool!

Key West, FL(Zone 11)

it's kinda freaky looking which is why i like it. If i can keep it alive after the flower goes ill treat myself to a white one.

Missouri City, TX(Zone 9a)

that's my thought!

Key West, FL(Zone 11)

WOW, I put mine out in the garden last week and was amazed at the flower today, i didn't realise the inner parts would keep opening too. i take back what i said about it not being as cool as the others now LOL.

April did you see yours yet.

Missouri City, TX(Zone 9a)

Not yet, still in CA, but my kids say it looks happy. Will be home on Tuesday.

Kissimmee, FL(Zone 9b)

Celt33040 is you Bat flower outside in the garden or in a pot outside? I have some seeds coming, and I thought I would put in pots outside in spring - will that work? This is not something I have ever seen before but they look terrific.

Key West, FL(Zone 11)

Seemama
Im new to these too and i did buy them with the flower buds on them already. I had them in side for a couple of days but they really took off when i put them in the garden. I left them in the pots but dug a hole in the mulch where i placed them about 6 inches deep in the ground, so they get all the benefits of the sprinklers and humidity but away from the snails and damp ground.
I would thing they woyld be happy once there out of the sun and kept humid.

Does anybody know if they repeat bloom or is it one per plant per year.

Kissimmee, FL(Zone 9b)

According to the people I bought mine from they die down and come back in spring.
This is what I have copied from a web site, I hope you find it helpful.

"TACCA CHANTERII - Very Rare!! This tropical plant, hardy in Zone 10, needs a minimum winter temperature between 55 and 60 degrees F at night with a daytime temperature 5 to 15 degress higher. It is best suited for growing in a greenhouse or a humid sunroom. Plant individually in 6" to 8" pots in coarse, rich, loamy soil that is well-drained. Fertilize weekly from spring to fall with half-strength liquid fertilizer. In cold climates, let the plant to go dormant in winter, water sparingly. These are blooming-sized healthy plants. Zones 10-11 or indoors"

Chesapeake, VA(Zone 7b)

Mine is still living. I have it in my sunroom that is kept minimumly (sp?) warm. It is green and looks healthy. I thought I had lost it. I put it in the SR and have ignored it. We will see. AT LEAST IT AINT DEAD YET!
Dawn

Kissimmee, FL(Zone 9b)

Dawn, Can't see why your plant cannot survive, you sing to it and make it happy.
Happy New Year to you all!

Chesapeake, VA(Zone 7b)

How is everyones doing? Mine went dormant! I really thought it had died, but kept holding on to it. I finally took it outside and took it out of its pot and low and behold it had some new roots on it. I gave it fresh potting soil and water and ... we'll see I guess.
