I need good advice on pruning my small trees and shrubs. Other than lilac, are there any that should not be pruned in the fall? Where can I find helpful, clear info on the proper method of pruning?
pruning
Start with your local cooperative extension service office (prepaid by your taxpayer dollars), where you should find literature on pruning trees and shrubs of your area. The Ohio State University's Agricultural Research facilities have produced lots of quality information for your state.
As a rule of thumb, spring blooming plants should be pruned AFTER flowering. Summer blooming plants usually bloom on new wood of that year, so can be pruned in fall after flowering or in early spring before leafing out. Follow specific pruning recommendations for specific plants that you are interested in. If you wish to invest in textbooks, look for US authors or authors that are from your region first before authors from elsewhere which may make recommendations that don't match well with OH circumstances.
Thank you for the suggestions. I will follow up on them.
