I'm new to this forum, but am looking for an expert who keeps up with nomenclature.
Is Magnolia ashii a species or is it a variety of M. macrophylla? I find it listed both ways.
What's in a name?
I goofed around on Google looking for a good taxonomic index. So far, the best I could find only listed American species, or common hybrids or garden. According to this, Magnolia asheiii is corret. Here is the site:

Hey, Resin, is there a single good source for all the world's plant names? This would be especially nice if it cross-referenced synonyms, past names, and was kept up to date.

Try http://www.itis.gov/ for the Integrated Taxonomic Information System. I found this after my original inquirey. I'd say it is a very reasonable resource.

IPNI: http://www.ipni.org/ipni/plantsearch?request_type=search&output_format=query&ret_defaults=on
and
ISHS/ICRA: http://www.ishs.org/icra/
are also good resources
Thank you so very much, Terry.
