How much would you pay?

If you saw a new Oriental-Trumpet hybrid that you really wanted, and it wasn't available anywhere else, how much would you pay? Let's assume they are coming from a reliable source and are 18-20 cm bulbs in premium condition?

Or how about a new double Oriental. Not Miss Lucy or Double Prize.

Something like this one that I got named Soprano

Oh Ramona, think I would gulp and pay $30 for that lovely bulb, and then hope it would come up in the spring!!

Saint Bonifacius, MN(Zone 4a)

There are two ways that I think about this kind of thing:

1. If it's a new bulb (or new anything, hard goods included) that will come down in price in years to come, that's one thing, and I am inclined to wait for a lower price. But I do not chastise anyone for jumping in right away. If it really makes them happy, then it can be worth it.

2. If it is rare, and can't be found anywhere else, now or in the foreseeable future, that's another thing, and I would pony up the bucks more easily.

Unfortunately, what I tend to like usually falls into category #2. But if it really makes me happy, then I go for it. 30 bucks? Yeah, it could be doable for me.

Good points Leftwood...fwiw..the 'older' orienpets are dropping in price somewhat.

LIke Silk Road is sellling for about $6.00 But it stayed up in price for many years though.

So if you were to put the money on the table today (and you are not being asked to do that), how much would you pay for a bulb like Soprano? Would you go for it?

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

It's hard to say ~ with Lefty's points in mind, plus I'd have to see it and fall in love with it's color, form, etc. I just might.

But I'm not a good judge right now.... my lily shopping has been "grounded". >:p

Lindenhurst, NY

OH it is beautiful Mainiac (love that name!!) I feel like a mainiac today.

I would probably pay up to 20.00, I don't know if I would go over that. For daylilys I went up to like 22, so I would probably do that for a lily also.

How much would you pay?

Thanks

I'm a spoiled brat when it comes to buying lilies, hosta, daylily, peony, and pretty much any other garden plant. If I really wanted it I'd do the $30.00 in the blink of an eye. Heck, I've been twitching on buying an yellow Itoh hybrid peony from Hollingsworth Peonies that is priced much higher than that. I need a spot prepared before I buy one, maybe next year...

PS. Moby, I see your Husker's didn't let me down. :) LOL

LOL Thought of you the whooooole time!

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

Okay.....I'm the one your looking for Mainiac....I just paid $30 for Lily Garden's Bravura. I am drawn to the more unusual, newer, higher priced things (I hate this about myself). Besides that, I just bought this peony that I loved (help me, Ticker!!!!) called Bartzella for much more than that. It called my name for years and years....and I finally gave in........
Call me a sucker. I am. I admit it. (What is this Liliaholics anonymous????)
On the other hand, I just got my LG oreder today ......and scaled off (bravely)two scales to try, thanks to all of this advice that's been here in the forum........so really...can I say...I really paid 10 bucks for 3???? Please can I say that???

Greenwood, IN(Zone 5b)

Where is Silk Road selling for $6????

Lisbon, IA(Zone 5a)

Ah Mags, welcome to the dark side. :) I've drooled over Bartzella for a long time. :) I'm so proud of you! See Mainiac, we're all pretty much crazy! :)

Diann

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

Ticker, Oh Bartzella! You see, I did fall into the dark side. I don't know if giving in makes me a sucker or worse. Have I no willpower??? But Ticker, you do know it is a beauty, don't you?
Okay Mainiac, I would pay 20-30, if I fell in love. when I fall, I fall hard. Are you saying you have something for us???? :0)

Willamette Valley, OR(Zone 8a)

I need to read closer LOL. I found myself scrambling through the Lily Garden catalog looking for Bartzella...

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

Sorry, Pard. Here's Bartzella (No, I did not pay any of these prices, I paid less)

Mainiac.....where are you?? :0)

Saint Bonifacius, MN(Zone 4a)

I can't believe someone actually named a peony "Bartzella." Whoever they are, they must not be American, or have a different sense of humor. I must admit, the name is funny. The plant is definitely in the running for a high buck meltdown.

Lindenhurst, NY

Magnolia, where did you buy Bartzella from (I want to know where you bought it, and how much it cost:-)

Lisbon, IA(Zone 5a)

It is a beautiful peony. :) I want Hollingsworth "Garden Treasure." But alas, I do not have a bed prepared for it and so... So, yes, Mainiac, yes, if I really wanted it, $30 wouldn't be a stretch. :) Lilies and peonies go well together. :)

Diann

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

I bought it from Solaris Farms. They just started a peony program, but I think they are sold out for the year.
Oh do they ever go well together...lilies and peonies.
Bartzella......creepy name, beauty of a plant! Those blooms really do get 9 1/2 inches across. Absolutely stunning...

Just checking in this morning. Well, I am feeling better about my insanity! AS my job is ending next month and I have not yet replaced it, I am not buying much this fall. And Soprano is no longer in production. But I may have some neat stuff in the spring.

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

I think $20 is the most I have ever paided, but I'd go up to $30 if it was something really different.

Columbia Heights, MN(Zone 4a)

I saw a new one today from Judith Freeman called Act II. It was going for 25.00 at the NSLS bulb sale. I think if I paid that much for a bulb, I'd probably take several scales from it.
