Badseed did you get your new greenhouse?

Lewisville, MN(Zone 4a)

We have been doing pretty good, 40's the last few days & rain. But then this morning we were going to go out for breakfast & the temperature drooped to 31½º. Rain turned to sleet, few minutes later, snow. Now it looks like Denver here. Stayed home by the way.

LOL I can't blame ya! It's been in the 50s and 60s here but today did not live up to the last few days. I've had little desire to set foot outside the door!

Hi everyone!
I'm new to DG and have been lurking since I began doing research on which GH to buy.
We got an 8x8 Rion also - it was a challenge at times to build, but it is now up and we have very few parts left over!
The doors were our biggest problem, partially due to a mistake of mine that DH patiently fixed!
Once they were up, the right sided door bowed out a bit at the bottom, but has since become happier over a week or two, and I only have to push it in gently with my foot to make them meet tightly. Hopefully it will contiune like it is or continue to improve.
I think some of this has to do with being out of rack - there are a lot of "parts" that on a wish and a prayer we hope will come out square.
We built it on a concrete pad we have right outside of the garage in back, so I am sure the pitch of the drainage of the concrete had something to do with our small fit issues.
I look forward to getting more good info from all of you vets - I don't even have a thermometer yet!
Looking forward to shopping!

That's quite a "unit" bulbhound. Did you make it or purchase it?

Dallas, GA(Zone 7b)

i made it from scratch {sortof} i had to cannibalise a lot of new lighting but what a unit i think it can be seen from space when i lite it up!

Columbia, TN(Zone 7b)

Bulbhound is that for warming seedlings or germination or both? Can you give details on how you built it please? My seed mat is woefully inadequate to my germination needs.

Thanks!

Hey Bulbhound! Long time no see! I've wondered about you and your Rion! Nice to see you.

I know someone had asked about the door being different on my replacement. It is! I'm not sure exactly what is different but I've been into the boxes and directions far enough to see some obvious things. It now comes with two metal plates that get screwed onto the bottom of the frame, on the left and right side of the door. There is also a long L shaped piece of plastic that goes above the door. It's hard to tell if it now has a sliding door or if the door is now outside of the greenhouse rather than inside the front frame.

I got the lumber delivered, leveled, stacked, strapped and screwed together yesterday. I've been off and running since I woke up this morning, but did get the bottom put together and set the uprights on. If it's not dark when I get home, I'll get that all screwed down and start on the roof. Otherwise it will have to wait until tomorrow when I'll hopefully get in earlier.

Proud to say I have a kid playing AAU basketball but it sure is a lot of running!

You remind me of the "Roadrunner" from cartoons Michele. You must be this tornado that just zooms by and leaves a bunch of jobs done when the dust clears. ;)

Brown City, MI(Zone 5a)

Michele,

I just saw your photo of your two greenhouse side by side (in another thread).

Looks like the second one is completely done now .............. were the door different? Any other improvements that you've noticed in the new one?

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Yep! It's up. I still have to put the rubber trim around the windows.

The doors are different. I'll run back out and take pics.

Instead of the doors setting inside the frame, they now sit outside of it, under an L shaped channel and the bottoms rest on metal plates that are screwed beneath the frame as you install it.

As you can see, even with the GH perfectly level and square, the doors still do not line up perfectly.

They also did not find a way to conquer the large gap between the doors.

Here, from inside, you can see the gap between the doors. I have not put the weather stripping in yet.

The metal piece you see is now at the top and the bottom to hold the door closed. We had to drill new holes to make them fit better, rather than use the pin hole as recommended.

This same metal piece used to be in the middle to hold the doors steady when closed.

They also did away with the dials at the top and bottom that DID hold the doors closed.

This is the L shaped header piece that connects to the outside, top of the frame only. It is connected with two four inch bolts (I think) and goes through the top piece to support the metal bar inside of it and is held in place with butterfly nuts.

Here is the L shaped header from the side.

This one just shows how the door fits on the front of the frame rather than inside it as it did with the previous model.

Of course they came out with brand a brand new model that allows something like an 8' height.

Looks like it is improved. I'd think the weather stripping would solve the gap problem where the doors come together. It's a pretty big gap, do you add the stripping to both sides?

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Yeah, the weather stripping does go down both sides but you have to cut out where the handle is and it does not go on the corners well. That part is not much different than it was. It still leaves pretty good gaps.

Brown City, MI(Zone 5a)

Maybe you could add some plastic to the inside that rolls up like a shade. It wouldn't be very heavy, and perhaps you could attach it with velcro .... maybe some velcro tabs at the bottom that you could attach and undo from the outside.

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

I actually bought a roll of foam insulation last year. I guess it's about four inches wide. I just taped it where I needed it from the inside so I could open and close the doors. When it warmed up, I removed it. All in all, for the price, they are nice greenhouses. ;)

Washington, MO(Zone 6a)

Hiya Badseed =)

I'm guessing you won't be needing that base. =)

The large weatherstripping I have, covers the gap between the doors just fine. I put one down each door, cutting only the stripping on the door with the handle. The latch on the door closes just outside the weatherstrip on the other door. The rest of the way up/down the door, the rubber is over-lapped. It seems a tight fit. Did you only put the rubber on the door with the handle, on the first (and this one) GH?

Hope this description made sense,
Eggs

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Hey Eggs!

I went ahead and built the base out of treated 4x4. You never know when I will get a wild hair and once I do, it must be dealt with immediately. LOL I had to have surgery Tuesday and wanted it before then. I had the lumber delivered on Friday, got it squared and leveled and strapped and screwed over the weekend, in between basketball tournaments then laid out and hooked together the base on Sunday. While hubby screwed it down, I built the roof. It's been so nice having hubby home this week!

I've not put the weather strip on this greenhouse yet. I did do it all the way around both doors on the other greenhouse though.

Brown City, MI(Zone 5a)

I'd like to hire you Michele to come and work for me for just one week ............. with your "get it done" attitude and know how, I know you would help me get more done in that one week, than I get done in a month. ;)

I'm still jealous of your greenhouses ............. but I'm learning a lot for when I actually do make the jump and get one.

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

I'd just about give anything in the world to have a work buddy! It would be so much easier to get stuff done quicker and more enjoyable if I had a friend to work with me. I just can't get anyone to come live with me and work with me! LOL

I'm really not all that driven to get stuff done. It's more the worry of what will happen if I do not. ;) Fear is the best motivator I think! It sure is nice to look and see what does get done but it is so much easier to see what didn't get finished. Must be that 1/2 empty, 1/2 full thing!
