I've been digging through scarab images, and this guy just isn't showing up...maybe he's not a scarab...but he sure looks like one.
Flies at night and attracted to light...I picked him up under out streetlight while walking the dog last night.
Any ideas?
CLOSED: Scarab of some sort?
You're right, it's a scarab http://bugguide.net/node/view/66135
I searched all through the Bugguide scarabs...guess I just missed him...
Apparently, this is a rare beetle! I think bugguide's pictures are a random selection. If you click on the lowest taxon you want repeatedly, it'll show different pictures for the same group. I don't think I explained it too well, but hey
Hmmm...I had my choice of them the other night...at least a half a dozen around the light...all on their backs and waving their legs in the air...
I just googled him and discovered they might be scarce....what do I put down in the comment area? I take it he's a dung beetle...that's the common name I gave it...is there any other name he goes by?
Well, he's one of the earth-boring dung beetles...they bring humus to their larvae in underground burrows
