Cornus officinalis Fruit

Cincinnati, OH(Zone 6b)

Very beautiful, large red edible fruit from a plant closely related to Cornus mas. Ripens its fruit much later.

Do they taste like C.mas?

Cincinnati, OH(Zone 6b)

Stupid me! I didn't even think to taste one. Now I'm POed with myself. I cleaned a few for seed, and they smelled a lot like sour cherries.

Make sure they are good and firm, if you go back to try one, Scott. You'll miss the full effect otherwise.

LOL
Yeah, and pop a few green persimmons in and chaw on them, too.

Okay, firm C. officinalis and green persimmons. I can't wait for these tasty treats!

The cornus won't be quite so off-putting as the unripe d.virginiana.
I actually kind of like a good firm, crisp C.mas fruit, but I'll be the first to admit that the dead-ripe soft ones have abit more flavor and less astringency.
